Course overview
Business teams often have access to large volumes of sales, operational, customer and financial data but still rely on static spreadsheets, manually refreshed reports and dashboards that answer only the questions anticipated at design time. Tableau enables analysts to turn connected data into interactive visual analysis, but effective dashboards require more than drag-and-drop chart building. They depend on sound data preparation, calculated fields, visual design choices, performance-aware modelling and an understanding of how users explore information to make decisions.
This five-day intermediate Tableau course develops the practical skills needed to build governed, decision-ready dashboards in Tableau Desktop. Participants connect to files, databases and published data sources; prepare and reshape data using Tableau Prep Builder; create calculated fields, table calculations, parameters and Level of Detail expressions; and select charts that reveal comparison, distribution, trend, relationship and geographic patterns. They build interactive dashboards with filters, actions, tooltips, navigation and device layouts, then learn how to test performance and publish securely to Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud.
Training is delivered through instructor demonstrations, guided build exercises and a sustained business intelligence case study. Participants work with realistic operational and commercial datasets, diagnose data-quality issues, translate stakeholder questions into dashboard requirements and iteratively improve their work based on user scenarios. By the end of the week, each participant produces a published dashboard pack: a prepared data flow, documented calculations, an interactive executive dashboard and a short deployment plan covering refresh, permissions and maintenance.
The course is designed for analysts and reporting professionals who already work with data and need to create reliable Tableau content for business users. It is equally useful for managers sponsoring a self-service BI capability who need dashboards that are easier to use, less dependent on manual reporting and more defensible in decision meetings.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable working with structured business data in tables and should understand rows, columns, data types, basic aggregations and common measures such as revenue, count and percentage. Prior use of Excel, SQL queries or another reporting tool is helpful, as is experience interpreting charts and KPIs. Some familiarity with Tableau Desktop is recommended, such as opening a workbook, connecting to a file and creating a basic chart; this is not a first-time Tableau course. Programming, advanced statistics, data engineering experience and prior Tableau Server administration are not required.
Training methodology
Each day combines concise instructor-led Tableau demonstrations with individual guided builds in Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder. Participants work through realistic sales, service and operations scenarios, first defining the decision question and then preparing data, building calculations and designing interactions around it. Peer review sessions use structured usability and visual-design criteria to improve dashboards. The final day is an application workshop in which participants complete, test and present a dashboard pack, then create an implementation plan for their own reporting environment.
Course outline
Day 1: Tableau foundations and data connections
- Tableau workspace, sheets, dashboards, stories and the analytics pane
- Connecting to Excel, text files, relational databases and published data sources
- Data roles, data types, geographic roles and default properties
- Dimensions, measures, aggregation and disaggregation
- Joins, relationships, unions and data-grain considerations
- Extracts versus live connections and extract refresh choices
- Visual encoding principles for categorical, temporal and quantitative data
Workshop: Build a sales performance workbook that combines customer and transaction data, validates the data grain and produces three foundational analytical views.
Day 2: Data preparation and analytical calculations
- Tableau Prep Builder flows, inputs, cleaning steps and output extracts
- Pivoting, splitting, grouping and standardising inconsistent source values
- Calculated fields using arithmetic, logical, date, string and conditional functions
- Aggregate calculations and ratio metrics
- Table calculations including running total, moving average, difference and percent of total
- Parameters for user-controlled assumptions and scenario analysis
- Level of Detail expressions using FIXED, INCLUDE and EXCLUDE
Workshop: Create a Tableau Prep flow and calculation library for a margin and customer-retention analysis, including a parameter-driven target scenario.
Day 3: Visual analysis and dashboard interaction
- Chart selection for comparison, composition, distribution, relationship and trend questions
- Advanced views including dual-axis charts, box plots, scatter plots and maps
- Reference lines, bands, forecasts, trend lines and clustering
- Filters, context filters, sets and groups
- Filter actions, highlight actions and set actions
- Viz in Tooltip and detail-on-demand design
- Dashboard layout containers, device designer and navigation objects
Workshop: Design an interactive regional performance dashboard that lets managers investigate underperforming products, territories and customer segments.
Day 4: Dashboard design, performance and governance
- Translating stakeholder questions into dashboard requirements and acceptance criteria
- KPI definition, annotation and calculation documentation
- Dashboard hierarchy, visual attention and accessible colour choices
- Performance recording and workbook performance diagnosis
- Extract optimisation, query reduction and efficient filter design
- Tableau Server and Tableau Cloud projects, permissions and publishing workflow
- Data refresh schedules, subscriptions, alerts and content ownership
Workshop: Audit and improve a slow executive dashboard, then produce a publishing checklist covering performance, permissions and refresh dependencies.
Day 5: End-to-end dashboard delivery
- Scoping a dashboard product from business decision to data requirement
- Building reusable worksheet and dashboard templates
- Testing calculations against source totals and business rules
- Conducting dashboard usability testing with stakeholder scenarios
- Publishing to Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud with project-level governance
- Presenting analytical findings and dashboard limitations to decision-makers
- Planning adoption, maintenance, enhancement requests and retirement criteria
Workshop: Complete and present a published dashboard pack comprising a prepared data output, documented calculations, executive dashboard and deployment plan.
