Course overview

Strategic plans often fail at the reporting stage: objectives are written in planning documents, measures sit in separate spreadsheets and systems, and executives receive static packs that show results without revealing which strategic priorities need intervention. This course addresses the practical challenge of converting a strategy map, balanced scorecard or operating plan into Tableau dashboards that connect enterprise objectives, KPIs, initiatives, targets, owners and performance status. Participants learn to design views that support leadership conversations rather than simply display charts.

The course covers KPI architecture, measure definitions, target and threshold logic, strategy-to-metric mapping, data preparation, dashboard interaction design and governed publication. Using Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder, participants build executive scorecards, objective drill-down views, initiative tracking dashboards, variance analyses and action-oriented exception reports. They practise parameter actions, set actions, dashboard actions, calculated fields, level of detail expressions, table calculations and performance optimisation techniques appropriate for strategic reporting.

Delivery combines instructor demonstrations, guided Tableau builds, critique sessions and a running strategic-planning case. Each participant develops a Tableau strategy performance dashboard prototype using a supplied case dataset or an approved anonymised organisational dataset. The final deliverable includes a strategy-to-KPI design canvas, data model and metric definitions, a multi-view Tableau dashboard, audience-specific navigation, and a publication and governance plan for Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server.

The course is best suited to professionals who already work with business performance data and need to turn it into a reliable decision system for executives, business-unit leaders and strategy owners.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Translate strategic objectives, critical success factors and initiatives into a Tableau-ready KPI hierarchy
  • Define KPI calculation rules, targets, thresholds, owners and reporting frequencies in a metric specification
  • Prepare and reshape strategic performance data using Tableau Prep Builder flows
  • Build calculated fields, table calculations and level of detail expressions for plan-versus-actual analysis
  • Design executive scorecards using Tableau KPI tiles, reference lines, status indicators and variance views
  • Create drill-down dashboard journeys with filters, parameters, set actions and dashboard actions
  • Apply dashboard usability and visual hierarchy principles to strategic management reporting
  • Publish a governed Tableau dashboard with permissions, refresh requirements and adoption measures

Benefits of attending

Who should attend

  • Strategy Managers — who must convert strategic plans into measurable executive reporting
  • Performance Management Managers — who own scorecards, KPI cycles and performance-review packs
  • Business Intelligence Analysts — who build Tableau reporting for senior leadership audiences
  • PMO Managers — who need to track strategic initiatives, benefits and delivery risk alongside KPIs
  • Business Unit Leaders — who need clear views of objective-level performance and corrective actions
  • Corporate Planning Analysts — who consolidate targets, forecasts and actual results across functions

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should be comfortable using Tableau Desktop to connect to data, create worksheets, build basic charts and assemble a simple dashboard. They should understand common business-performance concepts such as KPIs, targets, actuals, variances, reporting periods and organisational hierarchies. Experience working with strategic plans, balanced scorecards, PMO reporting or management information is helpful but not mandatory. Participants should be able to work with spreadsheet-style data and basic calculated logic. Prior programming, SQL expertise, data-science knowledge and advanced Tableau certification are not required. The course teaches advanced Tableau techniques in the context of strategic performance reporting rather than as isolated software features.

Training methodology

The instructor uses a realistic enterprise strategy case containing objectives, scorecard measures, initiative milestones, targets and actual performance data. Short demonstrations introduce each Tableau technique, followed by guided builds in Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder. Participants critique executive dashboard examples, work in small groups to resolve KPI-definition and visual-design choices, and iteratively test dashboards against leadership questions. Daily exercises add components to a single strategic performance solution. The final session includes dashboard review, publication planning and an individual application plan for the participant’s own reporting environment.

Course outline

Day 1: Strategy architecture and KPI design

  • Strategy maps, balanced scorecards and objective hierarchies
  • Translating strategic objectives into measurable KPI questions
  • Leading, lagging and diagnostic performance indicators
  • KPI definition templates for formula, owner, target and cadence
  • Target, threshold and RAG-status design principles
  • Selecting executive, management and operational dashboard audiences
  • Tableau workbook architecture for strategic reporting

Workshop: Participants create a strategy-to-KPI design canvas and metric specification for a supplied corporate growth strategy.

Day 2: Preparing trusted performance data

  • Assessing source data for actuals, budgets, forecasts and targets
  • Cleaning strategic performance data with Tableau Prep Builder
  • Pivoting period columns and standardising reporting-date fields
  • Joining KPI actuals to target, ownership and hierarchy tables
  • Creating Tableau relationships for objective and measure analysis
  • Data quality checks for missing values, duplicate records and inconsistent measures
  • Extract design and refresh considerations for management dashboards

Workshop: Participants build a Tableau Prep flow and validated analytical data source for a multi-business-unit scorecard.

Day 3: Calculations and strategic performance analysis

  • Calculated fields for actual, target, variance and variance percentage
  • Date calculations for month-to-date, year-to-date and rolling-period performance
  • Level of detail expressions for organisational and objective-level aggregation
  • Table calculations for trends, rankings and contribution analysis
  • Reference lines, distribution bands and performance thresholds
  • Parameter-driven period, scenario and measure selection
  • Exception logic for materially off-target strategic measures

Workshop: Participants create a reusable calculation library and analysis worksheets for plan-versus-actual KPI performance.

Frequently asked questions

You should be able to create basic worksheets, use dimensions and measures, and assemble a simple dashboard in Tableau Desktop. The course builds from that foundation into strategic KPI modelling, advanced calculations and interactive executive dashboard design.

A laptop capable of running Tableau Desktop is required for classroom delivery and strongly recommended for live online delivery. Participants should have access to Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder; a training dataset is provided, and organisational data may be used only when approved and anonymised.

Yes, provided you have basic Tableau familiarity and regularly work with KPIs, targets or strategic reporting. The course focuses on the reporting decisions strategy professionals need to make, not on technical data engineering or programming.

General Tableau courses commonly teach chart construction and broad visualisation techniques across many use cases. This course concentrates on strategy maps, scorecards, target logic, executive drill-down, initiative tracking and governance for leadership performance reviews.

Yes. The KPI design canvas, metric specification, dashboard patterns and governance approach can be applied to balanced scorecards, OKR reporting, annual operating plans and transformation programmes. Participants leave with a method for resolving the link between strategic objectives and the underlying Tableau measures.

You will leave with a working multi-view Tableau strategy performance dashboard prototype, supporting calculation logic and a KPI specification template. You will also have a publication, access-control and adoption plan for introducing the dashboard into management reporting cycles.
