Course overview
Corporate tax accountants are expected to turn complex tax-return data, forecasts and legal-entity information into a defensible income-tax provision under demanding close deadlines. The work requires more than calculating current tax: teams must identify temporary differences, assess uncertain tax positions, measure deferred taxes, support valuation allowance conclusions and explain effective tax rate movements to controllers, auditors and finance leadership. Errors can create audit adjustments, missed disclosures, delayed reporting and unreliable forecasts of cash tax and earnings.
This five-day course builds the practical tax provision accounting skills needed to prepare, review and support provisions under ASC 740 and IAS 12. Participants work through current and deferred tax calculations, tax-basis balance sheets, temporary-difference schedules, rate-reconciliation analyses, valuation allowance assessments, uncertain tax position documentation and provision-to-return true-ups. They learn how to organise source data from the general ledger, fixed-asset records, legal-entity trial balances and tax compliance workpapers into a controlled provision process with clear review evidence.
Instruction combines short technical briefings with spreadsheet-based calculations, realistic corporate close scenarios and guided review discussions. Participants build a provision workpaper pack for a simulated multinational group, including deferred tax roll-forwards, an effective tax rate reconciliation, journal entries, disclosure support and a close-calendar action plan. They leave with templates and review checklists that can be adapted to their organisation's tax reporting cycle.
The course is suited to corporate tax accountants moving into provision work, tax seniors responsible for reviewing close workpapers, and finance professionals who need to understand how tax accounting affects reported results.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Calculate current tax expense and payable balances from taxable-income and tax-return data
- Build a tax-basis balance sheet to identify taxable and deductible temporary differences
- Measure deferred tax assets and liabilities using enacted tax rates under ASC 740 and IAS 12
- Prepare a deferred tax roll-forward that reconciles opening, movement and closing balances
- Analyse and explain an effective tax rate reconciliation using permanent and temporary differences
- Document valuation allowance or deferred tax asset recoverability conclusions using forecast evidence
- Record tax provision journal entries and reconcile provision balances to the general ledger
- Create a provision workpaper pack with review controls, disclosure support and provision-to-return true-up schedules
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain the confidence to prepare deferred tax schedules rather than relying solely on provision software outputs
- Build evidence-based explanations for effective tax rate movements in close meetings and audit discussions
- Develop review-ready workpapers that demonstrate technical judgement on valuation allowances and tax positions
- Expand eligibility for corporate tax reporting, provision analyst and tax senior assignments
- Learn to translate tax-return information into financial-reporting entries, reconciliations and disclosures
For your organisation
- Reduce provision errors through standardised temporary-difference, rate-reconciliation and journal-entry procedures
- Improve audit readiness with clearer evidence for deferred tax balances, valuation allowances and uncertain tax positions
- Shorten close-cycle rework by linking general-ledger data, tax computations and provision workpapers systematically
- Strengthen management reporting through more credible explanations of effective tax rate and cash-tax movements
- Lower key-person dependency by equipping tax and finance staff with a shared provision methodology and templates
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Corporate Tax Accountants — who prepare current and deferred tax calculations during monthly, quarterly or annual close
- Tax Seniors and Tax Analysts — who review provision workpapers and investigate effective tax rate movements
- Tax Managers — who need a consistent, auditable provision process across legal entities and reporting periods
- Financial Reporting Accountants — who coordinate tax balances, journal entries and financial statement disclosures
- Controllers — who need to challenge tax-accounting estimates and understand the reporting impact of tax positions
- External Audit Seniors — who evaluate tax provision evidence, deferred tax calculations and related disclosures
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable reading a trial balance, income statement and balance sheet, and should understand basic corporate income tax concepts such as taxable profit, tax deductions, tax losses and statutory tax rates. Experience preparing tax returns, tax computations, reconciliations or financial reporting schedules is helpful, but prior tax provision responsibility is not required. Participants should be able to use Microsoft Excel for formulas, sorting and basic tables. Detailed prior knowledge of ASC 740, IAS 12, uncertain tax positions, tax provision software or advanced spreadsheet modelling is not required; these are taught through worked examples.
Training methodology
The instructor uses corporate close scenarios to connect tax technical rules with the workpapers participants must produce. Each day combines focused teaching on ASC 740 and IAS 12 requirements with Excel-based calculations, source-data reviews and facilitated peer checks. Participants calculate tax effects from trial balances, fixed-asset schedules, losses and tax adjustments; then defend their conclusions as preparers and reviewers. Group case work culminates in a complete simulated provision file, followed by an individual action plan for improving a live close process, control or workpaper in the participant's organisation.
