Course overview
Sales operations analysts are expected to turn annual growth targets into defensible territory designs, attainable quotas, and operational rules that sellers and leaders can execute. The difficulty is not producing a spreadsheet allocation; it is reconciling account potential, historical attainment, capacity, coverage gaps, ramp time, market changes, and leadership expectations without creating incentives that distort selling behaviour. Weak planning creates overloaded territories, unassigned accounts, quota inequity, forecast noise, and prolonged disputes after plan launch.
This course teaches participants to build an evidence-based territory and quota planning process from data extraction through executive recommendation. Participants learn to assess addressable market and whitespace, segment accounts, model sales capacity, establish quota-setting principles, calculate top-down and bottom-up quota allocations, test attainment distributions, and evaluate coverage scenarios. They use Excel models, Salesforce data structures, Power BI visualisations, and Anaplan planning concepts to translate commercial assumptions into auditable planning outputs.
Instruction combines worked models, analyst-led demonstrations, peer review, and a multi-day sales-planning case. Participants create a territory and quota planning pack containing a data-quality assessment, account segmentation logic, capacity model, territory design, quota allocation workbook, sensitivity analysis, governance calendar, and leadership briefing. The result is a reusable approach for explaining not only what quota was assigned, but why it is fair, achievable, and commercially aligned.
The course is designed for experienced sales operations professionals who support annual planning, redesign sales coverage, maintain CRM territory rules, or analyse quota performance. It also suits analysts moving into revenue operations roles where planning decisions must connect sales strategy, finance targets, and field execution.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Audit CRM opportunity, account, and quota data for planning readiness using defined completeness and consistency checks
- Segment accounts using revenue, potential, propensity, strategic value, and coverage criteria
- Build a seller-capacity model incorporating productivity, ramp profiles, attrition, hiring dates, and manager span
- Design balanced territories using geographic, named-account, vertical, and hybrid coverage rules
- Allocate quotas through top-down target cascades and bottom-up capacity-based calculations
- Test quota fairness with attainment distributions, workload measures, whitespace analysis, and sensitivity scenarios
- Configure a territory and quota planning workbook with auditable assumptions, version control, and exception flags
- Present a territory and quota recommendation with governance decisions, implementation steps, and executive-ready visuals
Benefits of attending
For you
- Build defensible quota models rather than relying on inherited allocation percentages
- Gain practical evidence for challenging unrealistic targets, incomplete data, and inequitable territory proposals
- Create executive-ready planning packs that demonstrate analytical judgement as well as reporting capability
- Strengthen readiness for senior sales operations, revenue operations, and commercial planning roles
- Develop a reusable framework for managing annual planning cycles and mid-year coverage changes
For your organisation
- Improve quota credibility by linking targets to market potential, seller capacity, and documented assumptions
- Reduce seller disputes and leadership escalations caused by opaque territory boundaries and inconsistent allocation logic
- Identify coverage gaps, account overlaps, and under-resourced segments before plans are deployed
- Create auditable planning models that finance, sales leadership, and compensation teams can review consistently
- Enable faster scenario analysis when hiring plans, market conditions, or revenue targets change
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Sales Operations Analysts — who build territory, headcount, quota, and coverage analyses for sales leadership
- Revenue Operations Analysts — who connect CRM data, financial targets, and go-to-market planning decisions
- Sales Planning Analysts — who need repeatable methods for annual and in-year territory and quota cycles
- Commercial Operations Managers — who oversee planning processes and must resolve allocation exceptions
- Sales Compensation Analysts — who need quota logic that aligns with incentive-plan mechanics and crediting rules
- Business Intelligence Analysts supporting Sales — who convert account, pipeline, and performance data into planning insight
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience working with sales performance, account, pipeline, or CRM data and be comfortable with Excel formulas, PivotTables, filters, and basic charts. Familiarity with concepts such as quota attainment, pipeline stages, account ownership, sales capacity, and fiscal periods is assumed. Experience extracting or reviewing Salesforce reports is useful, but participants do not need to be Salesforce administrators. No prior Anaplan, Power BI, statistical programming, advanced finance, or formal territory-design certification is required. Participants should be prepared to interpret data, question assumptions, and work with realistic sales-planning scenarios.
Training methodology
The course is delivered through instructor-led planning workshops using a realistic B2B sales organisation dataset. Short technical sessions demonstrate each method, followed by hands-on work in Excel, Salesforce-style extracts, Power BI dashboards, and Anaplan-style planning structures. Participants assess data quality, build capacity and quota models, compare territory scenarios, and defend choices in structured peer reviews. Group exercises mirror the negotiations between sales, finance, compensation, and regional leaders. On day five, each participant converts the case outputs into an application plan for their own planning cycle.
