Course overview

Supply chains often carry excess inventory, expedite freight, miss customer commitments, and still report poor availability because improvement efforts are spread across every node rather than focused on the constraint that governs total flow. This course equips procurement, planning, logistics, and operations professionals to use the Theory of Constraints (TOC) to identify the system constraint, protect it from disruption, and synchronise upstream and downstream activity. Participants learn to distinguish a true capacity, material, policy, or market constraint from local performance symptoms such as utilisation, backlog, or stockouts.

Across five days, participants apply the Five Focusing Steps, Drum-Buffer-Rope (DBR), buffer management, and Throughput Accounting to realistic supply chain decisions. They analyse constraint locations across suppliers, factories, warehouses, transport routes, and replenishment processes; set time and inventory buffers; develop release rules; and prioritise corrective actions from buffer signals. The course also addresses supplier reliability, purchasing policies, sales and operations planning, demand variability, and the operational measures needed to replace siloed cost optimisation with flow-based decision-making.

Instruction combines facilitated TOC models, worked calculations, supply chain simulations, Excel-based analysis, and group case work. Participants build a practical constraint-management pack for a selected supply chain scenario: a current-state flow map, constraint diagnosis, DBR design, buffer profiles, Throughput Accounting decision model, and a 90-day implementation plan. This provides a defensible basis for improving service, reducing working capital, and targeting investment where it will increase system throughput.
