Course overview

Corporate tax reporting teams must convert ledger data, trial balances, tax adjustments and jurisdictional information into a defensible current and deferred tax provision under demanding close timetables. When spreadsheets, emailed workpapers and manually maintained assumptions sit outside the reporting system, reviewers struggle to trace changes, validate effective tax rate movements and confirm that the tax footnote agrees to the provision. This course equips practitioners to use Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE Corporate Tax Reporting workflows to build a controlled, review-ready tax reporting process.

Participants learn how to configure and navigate ONESOURCE Tax Provision workspaces; load, map and validate source data; manage permanent and temporary differences; calculate current tax, deferred tax and valuation allowances; and analyse rate reconciliation and return-to-provision adjustments. The course applies ASC 740 concepts throughout, while identifying where IAS 12 requirements affect data, calculations and disclosures. Participants also practise using workpapers, task lists, diagnostics, review statuses and audit trails to make close activities visible and repeatable.

Instruction combines guided system demonstrations with hands-on work in a configured training environment. Each participant completes a progressive corporate tax reporting case, from entity setup and trial balance import through provision calculation, review and reporting output. They leave with a completed provision-case workbook, a documented close workflow, a control checklist and an action plan for applying ONESOURCE practices to their own reporting cycle.

The course is suited to tax accountants and finance professionals moving into provision work, as well as experienced corporate tax staff seeking a more structured way to use ONESOURCE during quarterly and annual close.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Configure an ONESOURCE Tax Provision reporting workspace using entities, periods, jurisdictions and account mapping rules
  • Import and validate trial balance data using source-data checks, mapping diagnostics and exception reports
  • Calculate current tax expense and payable positions from book-to-tax adjustments and jurisdictional tax rates
  • Build deferred tax calculations for temporary differences, tax losses, credits and enacted rate changes
  • Assess valuation allowance positions using recoverability evidence and documented judgement criteria
  • Produce effective tax rate reconciliations and investigate material rate drivers through provision analytics
  • Prepare return-to-provision adjustments and document their impact on current and deferred tax balances
  • Create a review-ready close package containing workpapers, approvals, audit-trail evidence and reporting outputs

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should understand the purpose of a corporate income tax provision and be comfortable reading a trial balance, journal entries and basic financial statements. Familiarity with current tax, deferred tax, temporary differences and the effective tax rate is helpful, but the course explains these concepts before applying them in ONESOURCE. Participants should be able to work confidently in Microsoft Excel and navigate browser-based business applications. Prior use of Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE is not required, and no programming, database administration or prior tax software configuration experience is assumed. Complete beginners should expect a demanding introduction to provision terminology alongside guided system practice.

Training methodology

The five-day programme uses instructor-led explanation of tax reporting concepts followed immediately by guided work in Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE Tax Provision. Participants work through a multi-entity corporate case, importing a trial balance, mapping accounts, posting tax adjustments, calculating current and deferred tax, and resolving validation exceptions. Short case discussions focus on judgement areas such as valuation allowances and rate changes. Peer review exercises test the quality of workpapers and reviewer evidence. On the final day, participants convert the case into an application plan, identifying their own close-cycle data, controls and reporting priorities.

Frequently asked questions

No prior ONESOURCE experience is required. The course begins with navigation, workspace structure, entities, periods and workflow concepts before progressing to data loading and provision calculations.

For live online delivery, participants need a laptop with a modern browser and reliable internet access. Training exercises use a configured learning environment, so access to your employer's production ONESOURCE instance is not required or expected.

General tax courses focus primarily on legislation and accounting principles. This programme applies provision concepts inside Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE, with practical work on data mapping, calculations, workpapers, workflow controls and review evidence.

Yes. The course addresses the common reality of Excel-based source schedules by showing how to prepare controlled inputs, reconcile data and retain supporting evidence in the ONESOURCE workflow. It also identifies where spreadsheet dependency creates review or audit risk.

You will leave with a completed multi-entity provision case, including mapped data, current and deferred tax calculations, rate reconciliation and review workpapers. You will also receive a close-control checklist and a workplace application plan tailored during the final-day workshop.
