Course overview
Managers are expected to deliver results while maintaining trust, direction and engagement through change, competing priorities and uneven team performance. Many rely on personal credibility or transactional controls, but struggle to translate organisational strategy into motivating messages, challenge ingrained ways of working without creating resistance, or adapt support to the needs of individual team members. This course provides a structured way to apply transformational leadership where day-to-day leadership behaviour has a direct effect on retention, performance, innovation and change adoption.
The course centres on the Four I's model: Idealized Influence, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation and Individualized Consideration. Participants diagnose their current leadership habits, distinguish transformational behaviours from transactional management, and practise methods for setting a credible example, framing a compelling team purpose, running challenge-based problem-solving sessions and conducting developmental one-to-ones. They also learn to use the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) framework, GROW coaching questions, SBI feedback and behavioural indicators to turn leadership intentions into observable routines.
Instructor-led analysis, leadership simulations, peer feedback and workplace cases are used throughout the week. Participants work on a live leadership challenge from their own role, such as implementing a new process, rebuilding team confidence or improving cross-functional collaboration. They leave with a Four I's Leadership Application Plan containing a stakeholder analysis, leadership-behaviour baseline, purpose narrative, team innovation intervention, individual development actions and 30-60-90 day measures for reviewing impact.
The course is designed for experienced supervisors, managers and emerging senior leaders who already lead people or influence delivery through others. It is particularly relevant for leaders responsible for change, service improvement, technical teams or dispersed teams where commitment cannot be secured through authority alone.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Diagnose leadership behaviour against the Four I's using a structured MLQ-informed self-assessment.
- Demonstrate Idealized Influence through values-based decision statements and visible leadership commitments.
- Craft an Inspirational Motivation narrative that links organisational priorities, team purpose and measurable goals.
- Facilitate an Intellectual Stimulation session using challenge questions, assumption testing and divergent-option generation.
- Conduct Individualized Consideration one-to-ones using GROW coaching questions and tailored development actions.
- Deliver behavioural feedback using the Situation-Behavior-Impact (SBI) model and agreed follow-up actions.
- Map stakeholders for a live change initiative and select Four I's interventions for each group.
- Produce a 30-60-90 day Transformational Leadership Application Plan with behavioural measures and review points.

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Operational Managers — who must sustain performance while leading teams through changing priorities and processes
- Team Leaders — who need practical methods to build commitment, capability and accountability across their teams
- Department Heads — who must translate strategy into a credible direction for multiple teams or functions
- Project Managers — who lead cross-functional contributors without relying solely on formal authority
- Change Managers — who need leadership interventions that improve adoption and reduce resistance to change
- Emerging Senior Leaders — who are preparing to lead through influence, culture-setting and strategic communication
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have at least one year of experience supervising staff, leading projects or influencing colleagues across a team. They should be familiar with basic management activities such as setting objectives, holding performance conversations, delegating work and participating in team meetings. Experience of a current workplace challenge, change initiative or team-performance issue is strongly recommended because it will be used in the application plan. No prior study of transformational leadership, coaching certification, psychometric accreditation or specialist software expertise is required. Participants should be prepared to reflect candidly on their leadership behaviour and give structured peer feedback.
Training methodology
The programme combines short instructor-led inputs with repeated practice of the Four I's in realistic leadership situations. Participants analyse MLQ-informed behaviour profiles, examine case studies involving change resistance and low engagement, and rehearse team briefings, coaching conversations and feedback discussions in triads. Small groups design interventions for a shared business scenario, then challenge each other's assumptions and implementation choices. Each day adds material to an individual workplace application plan. On the final day, participants present their plan, receive facilitator and peer critique, and refine their 30-60-90 day actions.
