Course overview
Compensation and benefits teams are often asked to solve retention, engagement and affordability problems with isolated changes to salary ranges, medical plans or bonus schemes. That approach can create inconsistent employee experiences, duplicate spend and difficult executive conversations. The WorldatWork Total Rewards Model provides a structured method for connecting compensation, benefits, well-being, careers, recognition and organisational culture to workforce priorities. This course helps HR professionals apply that model to diagnose gaps, set priorities and build a defensible total rewards roadmap.
Participants work through the model’s six connected dimensions, including organisational culture as the foundation for the five reward elements. They learn to translate business strategy and employee segments into reward objectives; map current programmes; evaluate value, cost, utilisation and equity; and identify where reward elements reinforce or contradict one another. The course also covers employee value proposition design, reward portfolio segmentation, stakeholder governance, metrics and executive-level business cases.
Instruction combines expert-led model walkthroughs with a running organisational case, spreadsheet-based analysis and facilitated design workshops. Participants use a Total Rewards Model application canvas to assess a selected workforce challenge, such as scarce-skill retention, benefit underuse or inconsistent recognition. They leave with a completed total rewards diagnostic, a prioritised initiative portfolio, measures for success and a 90-day implementation plan that can be adapted for their own organisation.
The programme is suited to HR and reward practitioners who already understand core pay and benefits concepts and now need an integrated framework for making reward decisions across the employee lifecycle. It is equally valuable for managers approving investment because it equips participants to link reward spend to workforce outcomes and explain trade-offs clearly.

Target competencies

- Compensation and Benefits Managers — who need to align separate reward programmes to workforce and business priorities
- Total Rewards Specialists — who must assess the full employee offering rather than administer isolated programmes
- HR Business Partners — who advise leaders on retention, attraction and employee experience interventions
- People Analytics Professionals — who need to connect reward data, workforce metrics and decision-ready insights
- Benefits Managers — who need to position benefits within a broader employee value proposition
- HR Directors — who need a repeatable framework for governing reward investment and presenting trade-offs to executives
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience in HR, compensation, benefits, reward operations or workforce planning, and should understand basic concepts such as base pay, variable pay, benefits eligibility, employee segments and turnover. Comfort reading simple workforce metrics and working with Microsoft Excel tables is expected; participants will use worksheets to compare programme cost, utilisation and value. No prior WorldatWork certification, advanced statistical training, job evaluation qualification or Power BI expertise is required. This is not a beginner introduction to payroll or benefits administration; complete newcomers should first gain familiarity with core compensation and benefits terminology.
Training methodology
The five-day programme uses instructor-led explanation of the WorldatWork Total Rewards Model followed by applied work on a realistic organisation case. Participants analyse workforce priorities, map existing rewards, compare programme evidence in Excel and debate portfolio choices in small groups. Facilitated workshops require participants to design reward responses for defined employee segments and defend recommendations to a mock leadership panel. Each day adds to an individual application workbook, culminating in a prioritised roadmap, measurement scorecard and 90-day action plan for a workplace challenge.
