Course overview
Senior professionals are often judged by documents that must do more than read well: board papers must support decisions, executive emails must secure action, business cases must justify investment, and sensitive messages must protect trust. When the audience is time-poor, sceptical, or politically invested, unclear structure, weak evidence, and imprecise language create delay, rework, and avoidable risk. This course addresses the challenge of writing documents that move decisions forward while remaining accurate, defensible, and appropriate for senior stakeholders.
Participants learn to diagnose audience needs, define a strategic writing objective, and select the right document architecture for the decision at hand. They use message maps, issue trees, SCQA and Pyramid Principle structures, evidence hierarchies, and action-led recommendations to develop persuasive reports, briefing notes, proposals, and executive correspondence. The course also develops control over tone, plain language, editing, visual hierarchy, and the handling of uncertainty, disagreement, and sensitive organisational messages.
Delivery combines instructor-led analysis of real corporate documents with timed drafting labs, peer review, executive-reader simulations, and facilitated rewriting clinics. Participants bring a live or anonymised workplace document and progressively rebuild it during the week. They leave with a Strategic Writing Portfolio: an audience and stakeholder map, message map, rewritten executive document, editing checklist, and 30-day application plan for improving a recurring communication process.
The course is designed for experienced professionals whose writing influences decisions across functions, projects, customers, regulators, or senior leadership. It is particularly valuable where documents need to withstand scrutiny while making the required action unmistakably clear.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

- Write business cases that link investment proposals to benefits, costs, risks, assumptions, and measures
- Apply an evidence hierarchy to distinguish facts, analysis, assumptions, and recommendations
- Edit high-stakes documents using a structured review checklist for logic, tone, clarity, and governance risk

- Programme and Project Managers — who must communicate delivery status, risks, dependencies, and escalation decisions clearly
- Business Analysts — who translate research, requirements, and options into decision-ready recommendations
- Policy and Strategy Professionals — who prepare evidence-based papers for leaders facing competing priorities
- Communications and Corporate Affairs Managers — who shape sensitive messages for internal and external stakeholders
- Consultants and Account Directors — who need proposals, client updates, and recommendations that earn confidence
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should already write routine workplace emails, reports, proposals, or briefing documents and be comfortable revising their own drafts in Microsoft Word. The course assumes familiarity with common business concepts such as objectives, stakeholders, risks, recommendations, and action plans. Participants should ideally bring an anonymised document they need to improve, such as a board paper, project update, business case, or client communication. No formal writing qualification, journalism background, graphic-design capability, or specialist publishing software is required. This is not a grammar-only course; participants should be ready to examine the strategic purpose and evidence behind their writing.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short teaching segments to introduce strategic writing frameworks, followed by close analysis of board papers, executive emails, business cases, and escalation notes. Participants map readers and decisions, draft under realistic time constraints, and test documents with peer reviewers acting as senior stakeholders. Rewriting clinics focus on removing ambiguity, surfacing evidence, sharpening recommendations, and controlling tone. Small-group case work examines a contested investment decision, while the final session converts each participant’s improved workplace document into a practical 30-day implementation plan.
