Course overview

Strategic communication fails when leaders treat it as message drafting rather than a disciplined management process. Senior professionals are often required to secure decisions, influence resistant stakeholders, explain complex change, protect trust during uncertainty, and align multiple functions behind a shared direction. In these situations, a technically accurate presentation or well-written email is not enough. Communicators need to diagnose stakeholder interests, frame choices credibly, anticipate objections, select the right channels, and measure whether communication has changed understanding or behaviour.

This five-day Advanced Strategic Communication Skills Training Course develops the methods used to plan and lead high-stakes communication. Participants build stakeholder maps, power-interest analyses, audience insight profiles, message architectures, communication objectives, executive briefing structures, and escalation plans. They practise narrative framing, issue management, difficult-question handling, persuasive recommendation writing, and communication measurement using outcome-based indicators. The course also addresses communication for organisational change, cross-functional alignment, sensitive announcements, and executive-level decision forums.

Delivery combines instructor-led models with realistic business cases, peer critique, facilitated simulations, and structured writing workshops. Participants work on a live or realistic strategic communication challenge relevant to their role, such as a transformation programme, policy change, customer issue, investment proposal, or reputational risk. They leave with a completed Strategic Communication Plan containing a stakeholder map, message matrix, channel plan, executive briefing, risk register, measurement framework, and 90-day implementation roadmap. The course is particularly valuable for professionals whose communication must influence action across functions, business units, external partners, or senior leadership.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should already communicate regularly with managers, clients, project teams, employees or external stakeholders and should be comfortable preparing presentations, briefing notes and business emails. The course assumes familiarity with basic communication concepts such as audience, purpose, tone, key messages and feedback, plus routine use of Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and online meeting tools. Participants will gain more value if they bring a current communication challenge, project or change initiative. No communications degree, public relations qualification, graphic-design capability, media-training experience or specialist analytics software is required.

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor-led briefings to introduce frameworks, followed by practical application to business scenarios and participants’ own communication priorities. Teams analyse stakeholder dynamics, rewrite weak messages, prepare executive recommendations, and run simulated conversations involving resistance, ambiguity and competing interests. Participants use Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and Miro to build communication artefacts, receiving instructor and peer critique against clear quality criteria. Each day adds a component to an individual Strategic Communication Plan, culminating in an implementation review and 90-day application plan.

Frequently asked questions

You should already be responsible for communicating with stakeholders, teams, clients, leaders or partners and have experience producing business communications. The course builds on basic audience analysis and message-writing capability rather than teaching introductory presentation or email-writing skills.

A laptop is strongly recommended for the live online format and useful in the classroom for building your communication plan. Exercises use Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and Miro; no specialist communications platform, design software or analytics system is required.

It is designed for managers and professionals who need to influence decisions and action across stakeholder groups rather than simply distribute information. It is particularly relevant to communications, change, HR, programme, public affairs and senior operational roles.

Presentation and writing courses focus primarily on individual delivery or document quality. This course focuses on the strategic system behind communication: stakeholder influence, message architecture, channel decisions, issue planning, governance and measurable outcomes.

Participants are encouraged to use a live workplace initiative as the basis for their assignments, subject to confidentiality requirements. The stakeholder map, message matrix, executive briefing and implementation roadmap can be refined and used after the course.

You will leave with a Strategic Communication Plan containing stakeholder analysis, communication objectives, message architecture, channel plan, risk and escalation actions, measurement indicators and a 90-day roadmap. You will also receive structured feedback on your executive briefing and difficult-conversation approach.
