Course overview
Work-related musculoskeletal disorders create costs that are rarely confined to a single incident: restricted duties, lost production time, repeated discomfort reports, compensation claims, equipment modifications and difficult return-to-work decisions. Senior safety, health and operational professionals need more than a workstation checklist. They need to identify exposure to force, repetition, awkward posture, vibration and manual handling demands; distinguish discomfort trends from reportable injury data; and justify controls using evidence that operations, engineering and finance teams can act on.
This advanced course develops a structured approach to ergonomic risk management across office, industrial, warehousing, laboratory and field-work settings. Participants apply task analysis, worker consultation, RULA, REBA, the NIOSH Revised Lifting Equation, ISO 11226 and ISO 11228 principles to assess postural loading, lifting, pushing, pulling and repetitive work. They learn to set assessment boundaries, collect defensible observation data, prioritise controls through the hierarchy of controls, specify engineering and administrative interventions, and evaluate whether changes reduce residual risk.
Teaching combines instructor-led technical sessions with video-based assessments, measurement exercises, calculation workshops and workplace case studies. Participants work from realistic task scenarios and build an ergonomic risk assessment pack containing task profiles, exposure scores, risk-priority rationale, control options, implementation owners and verification measures. This is a practical deliverable that can be adapted for a participant's own site, department or client portfolio immediately after the course.
The programme is designed for practitioners who already contribute to workplace safety, health, facilities, production or occupational health decisions and now need to lead more rigorous musculoskeletal risk assessments.

- Apply RULA and REBA scoring methods to evaluate upper-limb, trunk and whole-body postural exposure

- Assess pushing, pulling and repetitive-handling tasks against ISO 11228 principles

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience in workplace safety, occupational health, operations, facilities or a related role, and should understand basic hazard identification, risk assessment terminology, the hierarchy of controls and incident-reporting processes. Familiarity with common manual-handling principles and spreadsheet use is helpful because participants interpret task data and complete calculation worksheets. This is not an entry-level ergonomics course; complete beginners should first obtain a foundation in occupational health and safety risk assessment. No prior qualification in physiotherapy, biomechanics, industrial engineering or specialist ergonomics software is required.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short technical briefings to introduce each assessment method, followed by guided scoring of task videos, photographs and workplace scenarios. Participants practise observation sampling, body-posture coding, force and frequency estimation, NIOSH calculations, and control selection in small groups. Case studies include computer workstations, packing lines, warehouse lifts and push-pull tasks, requiring participants to reconcile worker feedback with operational constraints. Each day closes with a documented assessment activity, and the final session converts individual findings into an implementation and verification plan.

Day 1: Ergonomic Risk Management Frameworks and Exposure Analysis

Workshop: Participants analyse a multi-step packing task and produce a task profile, exposure map and initial ergonomic risk register entry.
Day 2: Postural Assessment and Workstation Evaluation
