Course overview
Agricultural markets fail to deliver value when farmers, aggregators, processors, transporters, lenders and buyers operate with incomplete information, weak commercial relationships or poorly understood incentives. Professionals working in agriculture programmes and agribusinesses need to identify where value is created, lost or captured across a chain; distinguish production problems from market-system constraints; and translate field evidence into realistic interventions, investments and supplier-development plans.
This course builds a practical foundation in agricultural value chain analysis and agribusiness decision-making. Participants map product, service and financial flows; calculate gross margins and value addition; assess market demand and buyer requirements; analyse stakeholder power and incentives; and identify constraints in production, aggregation, processing, logistics, quality assurance and market access. The programme also covers inclusive business models, contract farming, post-harvest loss analysis, traceability, climate risks and basic agribusiness planning.
Instructor-led sessions use a running commodity-chain case, supported by Excel-based calculations, buyer-specification reviews, group mapping exercises and structured discussions of real sourcing and market-access decisions. Participants work in teams to analyse a selected commodity chain and produce an Agricultural Value Chain Improvement Brief containing a chain map, margin analysis, constraint prioritisation matrix, stakeholder engagement plan and recommended commercial or programme interventions.
The course is suited to professionals who already work with agricultural producers, markets, rural enterprises or food supply systems and need a disciplined method for designing, managing or assessing value-chain initiatives. It is equally relevant to managers approving investments in producer organisations, sourcing programmes, processing capacity or market-linkage projects.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have basic familiarity with agricultural production, rural markets, food supply chains or development projects, gained through work experience, previous study or programme implementation. They should be comfortable reading simple tables, discussing costs and revenues, and using basic Microsoft Excel functions such as entering formulas and sorting data. No prior qualification in agricultural economics, finance or business administration is required. This is a fundamentals course for practitioners, but complete beginners should expect an intensive introduction to commercial terminology, chain actors, margin calculations and market analysis rather than technical farm-management training.
Training methodology
The five-day programme combines instructor-led technical sessions with a running case on a selected agricultural commodity. Participants build chain maps, calculate actor margins in Microsoft Excel, interpret buyer specifications, compare aggregation and contract-farming models, and use structured matrices to rank constraints and intervention options. Small groups work as an agribusiness advisory team, testing recommendations against commercial viability, inclusion and implementation risk. Each day closes with a practical application, culminating in an individual or team Agricultural Value Chain Improvement Brief and a workplace action plan.
