Course overview
Learning and development teams are expected to convert policies, systems training, compliance requirements and subject-matter expertise into e-learning that employees can complete, understand and apply. Yet many Storyline files rely on linear slides, inconsistent layouts and untested interactions, creating courses that are difficult to update and provide little evidence of learner decision-making. This course addresses the practical production gap between basic PowerPoint-style content and structured, trackable e-learning built for an LMS.
Participants learn to plan, build, review and publish responsive e-learning in Articulate Storyline 360. They create scenes and slide structures, apply slide masters and layouts, work with states, layers, variables, triggers and conditions, and build interactions such as branching scenarios, software simulations, knowledge checks and scored assessments. The course also covers accessible design choices, media preparation, question-bank settings, results slides, SCORM publishing options and quality assurance using Articulate Review 360.
Instruction combines short demonstrations with guided build sessions using an L&D case study. Each participant develops a working Storyline module based on a realistic business-learning brief, including a learner journey map, branded interface, scenario-based interaction, assessment and LMS-ready publishing settings. They leave with the source .story file, published course package, review link and a practical checklist for stakeholder review, testing and handover.
The programme suits L&D professionals, instructional designers and HR teams who need to produce or confidently commission Storyline-based learning. It is equally relevant to subject-matter experts moving into digital learning production and managers who need a clearer basis for reviewing e-learning quality, scope and technical readiness.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Plan a Storyline project using a learning brief, storyboard, asset list and scene map
- Build reusable course interfaces with slide masters, layouts, themes and branded player settings
- Create interactive learning screens using states, layers, triggers, conditions and timeline controls
- Develop branching decision scenarios using variables and learner-choice feedback
- Record and edit step-by-step and try-mode software simulations for system training
- Configure graded question banks, results slides, retry settings and completion rules
- Apply accessibility practices including focus order, alt text, captions, keyboard testing and visual contrast
- Publish and quality-assure an LMS-ready SCORM package using Storyline 360 and Review 360
Benefits of attending
For you
- Build a portfolio-ready Storyline module that demonstrates branching, assessment and accessible interaction design
- Produce e-learning independently rather than relying on developers for standard Storyline changes
- Review Storyline storyboards and source files with a working understanding of triggers, variables and publishing settings
- Add evidence of Articulate Storyline 360 production capability to an instructional design or L&D portfolio
- Use a repeatable build-and-test workflow for future compliance, systems and performance-support modules
For your organisation
- Reduce outsourcing costs and turnaround time for routine e-learning updates and internal module development
- Improve learner engagement through scenario-based practice rather than passive slide-only content
- Increase consistency across modules through reusable masters, templates, player settings and assessment patterns
- Lower LMS deployment risk by applying documented SCORM publishing, testing and completion-tracking checks
- Create more maintainable source files that can be reviewed, updated and handed between team members
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Instructional Designers — who need to build maintainable, interactive e-learning modules in Storyline 360
- Learning and Development Specialists — who convert business training requirements into digital learning assets
- E-Learning Developers — who need stronger control of Storyline interactions, assessments and publishing
- HR Learning Partners — who commission digital learning and need to review design and technical quality
- Subject-Matter Experts — who need to turn process knowledge into structured learner scenarios and demonstrations
- Training Managers — who oversee e-learning production standards, vendor outputs and LMS deployment
Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and does not require previous Articulate Storyline experience. Participants should be comfortable using Microsoft Windows, managing folders and files, working with browser-based systems, and creating or reviewing training content. Familiarity with learning objectives, basic PowerPoint design or an LMS is helpful but not assumed. Bring a Windows laptop on which Articulate Storyline 360 is installed and activated; Storyline is a Windows desktop application. A current Articulate 360 trial or organisational licence is suitable. No programming, graphic-design qualification, audio-editing expertise or SCORM configuration experience is required.
Training methodology
The instructor demonstrates each Storyline feature in a live build, then participants apply it immediately in their own course file. Exercises use an HR and business-learning case study to practise converting objectives into scenes, interactions and assessments. Participants work individually on core build tasks and in peer review pairs to test navigation, feedback, accessibility and completion logic. Daily troubleshooting clinics address common trigger, timeline and publishing errors. The final session includes a structured review of each module and an application plan for the participant’s next workplace project.
Course outline
Day 1: Storyline project setup and learning structure
- Storyline 360 workspace, scenes, slides and timeline navigation
- Translating a learning brief into measurable objectives and a scene map
- Storyboard fields for narration, on-screen text, interactions and feedback
- Creating projects, selecting aspect ratios and managing source-file folders
- Applying themes, fonts, colour schemes and project-wide design settings
- Building slide masters, layouts and reusable navigation elements
- Importing PowerPoint content and identifying content that needs redesign
Workshop: Participants create a scene map and branded Storyline shell for a workplace learning module, including master slides and a reviewed storyboard.
Day 2: Interactive screens and learner-controlled navigation
- Timeline sequencing for text, media, animations and cue points
- Object states for selected, visited, disabled, hover and custom behaviours
