Course overview
Distribution centres depend on accurate system-directed work to meet service commitments without creating excess handling, inventory errors or avoidable expedites. Blue Yonder Warehouse Management users must be able to interpret task priorities, execute receiving and replenishment correctly, manage exceptions, and see how operational decisions affect order cycle time, labour productivity and inventory integrity. This course addresses the gap between knowing individual WMS screens and running controlled, measurable warehouse processes across inbound, storage, fulfilment and dispatch.
Participants work through Blue Yonder WMS workflows for receiving appointments, ASN-based receiving, putaway, location and inventory control, replenishment, wave planning, picking, packing, shipping and returns. They learn to interpret key transaction statuses, apply allocation and task-management rules, investigate inventory discrepancies, and use operational reporting to identify bottlenecks. The course also covers mobile execution, barcode standards, exception handling and practical controls for maintaining traceable, auditable distribution operations.
Instructor-led demonstrations are followed by guided system exercises and a distribution-centre case study that progresses from inbound receipt to outbound dispatch. Participants analyse operational scenarios, make configuration-informed execution decisions, and use reports to defend process improvements. Each participant leaves with a completed Blue Yonder WMS operating playbook containing transaction checklists, exception-resolution steps, KPI definitions and a 90-day workplace application plan.
The course is suited to warehouse and distribution professionals who already work with WMS-driven processes and need stronger operational command of Blue Yonder Warehouse Management. Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience of warehouse operations in at least one of receiving, putaway, replenishment, picking, packing, shipping or inventory control. They should understand basic concepts including stock status, bin or location control, SKU, LPN, ASN, wave and cycle count. Familiarity with navigating Blue Yonder Warehouse Management, or another enterprise WMS, is strongly recommended; participants who have used only spreadsheets will need additional preparation. No programming, database administration, integration development or Blue Yonder configuration certification is required. A personal laptop is useful for live online participation and course exercises.
Training methodology
The five-day programme combines instructor-led Blue Yonder WMS walkthroughs with guided transaction exercises based on a multi-channel distribution centre. Participants receive inbound stock, direct putaway, replenish pick faces, release waves, execute mobile picking and resolve shipment exceptions. Small groups use operational reports to diagnose a backlog and recommend corrective action, then compare decisions against service and inventory-control requirements. Daily debriefs convert system activity into operating rules. On the final day, each participant completes a workplace application plan and a site-relevant WMS operating playbook.

Day 1: Warehouse process control in Blue Yonder WMS
- Blue Yonder Warehouse Management process architecture and transaction lifecycle
- Warehouse, zone, location and work-area master-data relationships
- Item, SKU, LPN, lot and inventory-status control concepts
- User roles, security responsibilities and operational audit trails
- Inbound-to-outbound process mapping for distribution operations
- WMS task states, queues, priorities and work assignment principles
- Operational KPI baseline definitions for service, accuracy and productivity
Workshop: Participants map a distribution-centre process from receipt to despatch and produce a control-point map showing the Blue Yonder WMS transactions and ownership at each stage.
Day 2: Inbound receiving, putaway and inventory integrity
- Advance shipping notice validation and receiving appointment controls
- Receipt confirmation by SKU, quantity, LPN, lot and serial attributes
- Quality inspection, hold, quarantine and inventory-status workflows
- Directed putaway logic using location capacity, compatibility and velocity
- Mobile receiving and scan-validation procedures in Blue Yonder WMS Mobile
- Cycle counting, physical adjustments and transaction-history investigation
- GS1-128 barcode structures for pallet and carton identification
Workshop: Participants process an ASN receipt with a quantity variance and quality hold, then produce an exception record and directed-putaway decision log.
Day 3: Replenishment, allocation and order fulfilment

Workshop: Participants build a wave-release plan for mixed priority orders and produce a replenishment and picking sequence that meets a stated carrier cut-off.
Day 4: Shipping, returns and operational exception management
- Manifesting, carrier service selection and shipping confirmation transactions
- Load building, dock-door staging and departure-control checkpoints
- EDI X12 shipment-status messages and interface exception awareness
- Return merchandise authorisation and disposition workflows
- Exception triage using transaction status, error messages and work queues

- Escalation matrices and shift-handover controls for unresolved exceptions
Workshop: Participants investigate a delayed shipment involving a short pick, an interface error and a staging mismatch, then produce a corrective-action and escalation plan.
Day 5: Performance reporting and site application planning
