Participants learn to design a public-sector performance measurement model, translate strategic priorities into measurable indicators, and build governed datasets for reporting. The course covers data quality profiling, SQL-based data preparation, dimensional modelling, Power BI data modelling, DAX measures, interactive dashboards, target and variance analysis, geographic and demographic segmentation, and responsible handling of confidential data. Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should be comfortable working with tabular data in Excel or a similar spreadsheet tool and understand basic concepts such as rows, fields, filters, sorting, percentages and averages. Prior exposure to performance reporting, service delivery data, budgets or administrative datasets is strongly recommended. Participants should also recognise the purpose of a database table and be willing to write and adapt simple SQL queries during guided exercises. Power BI experience is helpful but not essential; the course introduces the required interface and modelling workflow. Advanced statistics, programming, data science and prior DAX knowledge are not required.

Training methodology

The instructor uses short, focused demonstrations followed by guided builds in Power BI, SQL and Excel-based data-quality templates. A running public-sector case provides finance, demand, case-processing and outcome records with deliberately inconsistent codes, late submissions and ambiguous targets. Participants work individually and in small groups to resolve metric definitions, model the data, construct measures and critique dashboard choices from the perspective of a service director and auditor. The final session converts the case work into an application plan for each participant’s own reporting environment.

Day 1: Public-sector performance architecture and trusted measures

Day 2: Preparing and governing performance data

Frequently asked questions

No prior DAX experience is required, and the course introduces the Power BI modelling and report-building workflow through guided exercises. You should, however, be comfortable working with tables, filters, percentages and basic spreadsheet analysis.

A laptop capable of running Power BI Desktop is recommended for classroom delivery and required for live online participation. Exercises use Power BI Desktop, Microsoft SQL Server query examples and Excel-based templates; joining instructions and sample files are provided.
