Course overview

Strategic plans often fail at the point of execution: priorities sit in slide decks, initiatives are tracked in separate spreadsheets, executives cannot see whether progress is on track, and teams struggle to connect weekly work to organisational outcomes. This course addresses that implementation gap for professionals responsible for configuring, administering or using Cascade Strategic Planning Software. Participants learn how to convert an approved strategy into an operating system of goals, measures, initiatives, ownership, reporting and review routines that leaders can use to make decisions.

The course covers the Cascade planning workspace from initial strategy structure through to live performance reporting. Participants build strategic plans, focus areas, objectives, key performance indicators, initiatives and milestones; define owners, update cadences and status rules; create alignment links between team and corporate plans; and configure dashboards and reports for different audiences. They also practise applying OKR and KPI design principles, setting meaningful targets, identifying performance risks and creating governance routines for strategic reviews.

Teaching combines instructor demonstrations in Cascade with guided configuration labs, realistic leadership-team scenarios and peer review of planning decisions. Each participant works through a structured implementation case and leaves with a configured Cascade strategy plan, including an objective hierarchy, linked measures and initiatives, a reporting dashboard, a status-update process and a 90-day rollout plan. The resulting materials can be adapted directly for a departmental or enterprise deployment.

The programme suits strategy, transformation and performance-management professionals as well as operational leaders who need to make strategy execution visible and accountable. It is appropriate for organisations introducing Cascade, rebuilding an underused workspace or standardising planning and reporting practices across business units.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Configure a Cascade strategy plan with focus areas, objectives, measures and initiatives
  • Translate strategic priorities into aligned OKRs, KPIs, targets and accountable owners
  • Build objective hierarchies and alignment links between corporate, business-unit and team plans
  • Create measurable initiative records with milestones, due dates, dependencies and progress updates
  • Design KPI scorecards with baseline values, target logic, update frequency and status thresholds
  • Construct Cascade dashboards and reports for executive, departmental and initiative-review audiences
  • Apply a weekly and monthly strategy review cadence using Cascade updates, comments and exception reporting
  • Produce a 90-day Cascade implementation and adoption plan for a live organisational use case

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Gain practical evidence that you can configure Cascade for strategy execution rather than merely update plans
  • Build confidence in challenging vague objectives, weak KPIs and unowned initiatives before they enter the system
  • Develop a reusable method for linking departmental work to corporate priorities and executive reporting
  • Strengthen credibility in strategy, PMO or transformation roles through dashboard and governance design capability
  • Leave with a portfolio-ready Cascade implementation artefact and 90-day adoption plan

For your organisation

  • Creates a consistent structure for objectives, KPIs, initiatives, owners and status reporting across plans
  • Reduces spreadsheet-based reporting effort by establishing live Cascade dashboards and update routines
  • Improves executive decision-making through clear target variance, initiative progress and exception visibility
  • Limits implementation risk by defining ownership, data-update cadence and review governance before rollout
  • Increases adoption of Cascade by equipping internal champions to train teams and maintain usable plans

Who should attend

  • Strategy Managers — who must turn strategic plans into visible, governed execution portfolios
  • PMO Managers — who need to connect programmes, initiatives and delivery milestones to strategic objectives
  • Business Performance Managers — who own KPI reporting and require consistent status and target rules
  • Transformation Leaders — who are implementing enterprise change and need cross-functional alignment visibility
  • Department Heads — who need to cascade corporate priorities into accountable team objectives
  • Cascade Administrators — who configure workspaces, templates, permissions and reporting structures for users

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should be comfortable using browser-based business software and interpreting basic management information such as targets, actuals, milestones and red-amber-green status. Experience with strategic plans, departmental KPIs, OKRs, project portfolios or performance reviews is useful, but not essential. Participants should have access to a Cascade sandbox, trial or organisational workspace where possible; guided exercises can also be completed in a training environment. No programming, database administration, data modelling or prior Cascade certification is required. Complete beginners should expect to spend time learning both strategic-planning terminology and the practical navigation of the Cascade interface.

Training methodology

The instructor alternates short demonstrations of Cascade functions with guided build sessions in which participants configure the same components themselves. A running case study follows a leadership team from strategic priorities to departmental objectives, KPIs, initiatives and executive reporting. Small-group critiques test whether measures are decision-useful and whether alignments are credible. Participants use templates for KPI definitions, ownership rules and review cadences, then complete an end-of-course implementation workshop that converts their configuration decisions into a practical 90-day adoption plan.

Course outline

Day 1: Strategy architecture and Cascade foundations

  • Cascade navigation, workspace structure and plan-level permissions
  • Strategic planning operating model and execution-accountability principles

Frequently asked questions

No. The course starts with navigation, plan structure and the relationship between objectives, measures and initiatives. Familiarity with strategic planning or KPI reporting is helpful because it allows you to focus more quickly on configuration decisions.

A laptop is required for the hands-on configuration labs. Access to a Cascade sandbox, trial account or organisational workspace is strongly recommended; where this is not available, exercises can be completed in a trainer-provided environment.

It is designed for both groups where they work together on strategy execution. Strategy and performance professionals learn how to structure useful plans, while administrators learn how to configure templates, governance and reporting to support those plans.

General strategy courses concentrate on analysis, choices and plan development. This programme focuses on operationalising an existing strategy in Cascade through configuration, KPI architecture, initiative tracking, dashboards and recurring review practices.

You can use the plan structure, KPI definitions, dashboard layout and governance templates to build or improve a real departmental plan. The 90-day rollout roadmap provides a sequence for piloting the approach, assigning owners and establishing update routines.

You leave with a configured case-based Cascade plan containing objectives, measures, initiatives, alignments and dashboard views. You also receive a documented implementation and adoption plan that can be tailored to your organisation's operating model.
