Course overview
Communications teams are expected to show more than coverage volume. Leaders need evidence of whether a launch reached priority media, whether executive messaging appeared accurately, how sentiment changed during an issue, and whether earned media contributed to reputation, demand or stakeholder confidence. This course equips PR professionals to use Cision as a working monitoring and evaluation environment, replacing ad-hoc clipping, untested sentiment assumptions and dashboard reports that do not answer management questions.
Participants learn to configure Cision searches, source lists, alerts and dashboards around real communication objectives. They build Boolean queries that reduce irrelevant mentions, apply inclusion and exclusion rules, classify coverage by message, spokesperson, outlet tier and topic, and investigate coverage patterns using reach, prominence, sentiment, share of voice and engagement indicators. The course also addresses the discipline behind credible PR measurement: baselines, measurement frameworks, data quality checks, benchmark selection, narrative analysis and the limits of advertising-value equivalents.
Instructor-led demonstrations are followed by guided work in Cision using a realistic campaign and reputation-monitoring case. Participants practise briefing stakeholders, translating objectives into measurement questions, refining noisy search results, interpreting media intelligence and presenting findings for senior decision-makers. Each participant leaves with a Cision monitoring specification, a documented Boolean search string, a reporting dashboard plan and a PR analytics report outline that can be adapted for their organisation.
The course suits in-house communications teams, agency account teams and analysts who need to move from operational media monitoring to defensible PR insight. It is equally useful for professionals setting up a new monitoring programme and for established Cision users who need more reliable searches, clearer KPIs and stronger management reporting.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Build Cision Boolean search queries using operators, proximity rules, exclusions and source filters
- Configure media monitoring dashboards, saved searches, alerts and briefing workflows in Cision
- Classify earned-media coverage against message, spokesperson, outlet tier, topic and campaign criteria
- Calculate and interpret share of voice, sentiment, reach, prominence and engagement measures
- Apply the AMEC Integrated Evaluation Framework to connect communication objectives with measurable outputs and outcomes
- Audit monitoring data for duplicate content, false positives, missing sources and unreliable sentiment labels
- Create an executive PR analytics report that combines quantitative indicators with evidence-based narrative insight
- Produce a monitoring specification and reporting cadence for a live campaign or reputation issue
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for turning media mentions into management-ready PR evidence

- Communications Managers — who oversee media monitoring suppliers, internal reporting and issue response
- Media Relations Managers — who need to track priority coverage, journalist activity and message pull-through
- PR and Communications Analysts — who turn Cision data into dashboards, insights and recommendations
- Agency Account Managers — who must provide clients with transparent, defensible earned-media evaluation
- Corporate Affairs and Reputation Specialists — who monitor stakeholder narratives and emerging reputational risks
Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should understand the basic purpose of media relations, earned media and communication campaigns, and should be comfortable working with spreadsheets, web applications and simple tables or charts. Familiarity with their organisation’s brands, competitors, spokespeople and priority stakeholder groups will make the exercises more valuable. Access to a Cision account is useful for applying the work directly, but it is not required for attendance; trainer-led demonstrations and practice materials are provided. No prior experience of Boolean logic, PR measurement frameworks, data analysis software or Cision configuration is required.
Training methodology
The programme combines short instructor-led explanations with live Cision demonstrations, individual query-building practice and group analysis of a campaign and reputation scenario. Participants work from communications objectives through to search construction, coding rules, dashboard choices and management reporting. Exercises use deliberately noisy media datasets so learners must diagnose false positives, duplicates and sentiment errors rather than accept platform outputs uncritically. Daily review sessions compare analytical decisions, and the final workshop converts each participant’s work into an implementation plan for their own monitoring and reporting routine.
Course outline

- Query testing against known relevant and irrelevant coverage
Workshop: Participants build, test and refine a Boolean query for an ambiguous brand or issue, producing a documented search string and relevance-testing log.
Day 3: Classification, dashboards and alerting
- Coverage coding schemes for message, spokesperson, theme and outlet tier
- Manual tagging and categorisation rules for consistent analysis
- Cision dashboard widgets, visualisations and filtering choices
- Real-time alerts, trigger thresholds and notification routing

- Structuring executive PR reports around decisions and actions
- Writing insight headlines from Cision data rather than listing metrics
- Chart selection for trends, share of voice and message analysis
