Course overview

Development and humanitarian programmes depend on timely, credible field data to monitor service delivery, beneficiary reach, commodity availability, safeguarding concerns and results against indicator targets. Yet many teams still rely on paper forms, inconsistent enumerator practices, delayed spreadsheets and weak validation rules. This creates avoidable risks: duplicate records, missing consent, unusable GPS data, late corrective action and reports that cannot be defended to donors or programme leadership. This course enables M&E professionals to design and manage CommCare-based mobile data collection workflows that support routine monitoring rather than one-off surveys.

Participants build CommCare applications for common development monitoring use cases, including household visits, facility assessments, distribution monitoring, referral follow-up and supervision checklists. They learn to translate indicator reference sheets into form questions, case properties, skip logic, constraints, relevance conditions and multilingual labels. The course covers CommCare HQ project setup, mobile form configuration, case management, user roles, data quality controls, offline deployment, data exports and basic integration planning for systems such as DHIS2. Participants also learn how to test forms systematically and document a field-ready data collection protocol.

Teaching combines instructor demonstrations in CommCare HQ with guided configuration labs, field-data scenarios and peer review of forms against monitoring requirements. Each participant works on a realistic programme monitoring brief and develops a deployable CommCare prototype. They leave with a configured mobile form workflow, a data dictionary, a test script, a user and device deployment plan, and an action plan for adapting the solution within their own programme.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have working knowledge of development or humanitarian monitoring concepts, including indicators, numerator and denominator definitions, disaggregation, data collection tools and basic data quality checks. Experience using spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel to review tabular data is expected. Participants should be comfortable navigating web applications and Android smartphones or tablets. Prior experience with CommCare, programming, SQL, API development or advanced statistics is not required. Those without prior form-design experience can participate, but should bring a simple monitoring form, indicator matrix or reporting template from their programme to use during the practical work.

Training methodology

The five days alternate short instructor-led demonstrations with guided builds in CommCare HQ and CommCare Mobile. Participants configure a monitoring application from a realistic development programme brief, then test it as both a mobile worker and a data manager. Exercises include converting indicators into form logic, modelling beneficiary cases, reviewing flawed forms, simulating offline synchronization and inspecting exported data in Excel. Small-group peer reviews test whether each application can produce valid monitoring evidence. The final session uses an implementation-planning workshop to connect the prototype to participants’ own field teams, devices, governance arrangements and reporting cycle.
