Course overview

Construction projects are delivered through a chain of interdependent design, procurement, site, commercial and handover activities. When programme logic is weak, responsibilities are unclear or progress reporting relies on incomplete site information, small constraints become delay claims, cost exposure and disrupted trades. This course equips project personnel to coordinate site delivery with a disciplined management approach that connects the baseline programme, work packages, risk controls, subcontractor commitments and client reporting.

Participants learn how to define project scope and governance, build a work breakdown structure, sequence construction activities, develop and update a critical-path programme, and measure progress against planned production. The course covers look-ahead planning, resource loading, earned value indicators, risk registers, change control, procurement interfaces, site meetings and reporting. Participants also practise managing common construction issues including late information, design changes, access restrictions, subcontractor underperformance and programme recovery.

Teaching is based on a live construction project case, with instructor-led demonstrations, schedule-building workshops, site-delivery scenarios and group decision-making exercises. Participants use planning and reporting templates to create a practical site delivery pack: a work breakdown structure, baseline programme extract, three-week look-ahead plan, risk register, progress dashboard, change log and recovery action plan. The pack can be adapted for use on their current or next project.

Requirements and prerequisites

This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should understand basic construction project terminology such as drawings, specifications, subcontractors, milestones, variations and practical completion, and should have some exposure to a construction site, project office or contractor environment. Familiarity with spreadsheet use and simple bar-chart programmes is useful because participants will work with planning and reporting templates. A laptop with Excel and, where available, Microsoft Project or Primavera P6 access is helpful. Formal project management qualifications, advanced scheduling expertise, cost-estimating knowledge and prior use of Procore are not required. Complete beginners should expect an intensive introduction to construction delivery controls.

Training methodology

The five days combine instructor-led construction delivery briefings with guided work on a realistic building-project case. Participants build and interrogate programme extracts, convert site information into look-ahead plans, assess delay scenarios, and use risk, change and action-control templates. Small groups take the roles of contractor, client and subcontractor during coordination and recovery workshops, requiring them to defend priorities and proposed actions. Each day closes with an applied output, and the final session turns the case materials into an implementation plan for the participant’s own project environment.

Day 1: Construction project controls and delivery setup

  • Construction project lifecycle from mobilisation to practical completion
  • Scope definition through employer requirements, drawings and work packages
  • Work breakdown structures for trade, zone and deliverable control
  • Responsibility assignment matrices and package ownership
  • Project governance, delegated authority and decision routes
  • Baseline documents, assumptions registers and information-release schedules
  • Interface mapping between client, designer, contractor and subcontractors

Day 2: Planning, sequencing and programme development

  • Activity definition, durations and construction sequencing logic
  • Predecessors, successors, leads, lags and finish constraints
  • Critical-path method and float interpretation
  • Milestones for procurement, inspections, testing and handover
  • Resource loading and trade-balancing principles
  • Programme baselines, update cycles and version control
  • Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project schedule views for construction teams

Workshop: Participants create a logic-linked programme extract, identify the critical path and test the effect of a delayed procurement activity.

Day 3: Short-term site delivery and progress control

  • Rolling-wave planning and three-week look-ahead schedules

  • Daily production records and quantity-based progress measurement
  • Planned-versus-actual tracking and milestone trend reporting
  • Earned value indicators for schedule and cost performance

Workshop: Participants turn a master programme into a three-week look-ahead plan and produce a progress dashboard from site reporting data.

Day 4: Risk, change and commercial delivery interfaces

  • Early warning and notification practices under NEC4 ECC
  • Variation assessment and change-control workflow
  • Delay records, contemporaneous evidence and event logs

Day 5: Recovery, handover and management application
