Course overview
Education providers depend on reliable identity, connectivity, devices, learning platforms and data services to keep teaching, assessment and administration running. Yet school, college and university IT teams must manage rapid device turnover, shared and personal devices, safeguarding requirements, peak-time network demand, fragmented cloud services and limited support capacity. This course addresses the operational gap between maintaining technology and designing an education technology infrastructure that is secure, supportable, measurable and aligned to academic delivery.
Participants learn how to assess and manage the infrastructure supporting digital learning environments. The course covers service mapping, identity and access management, device lifecycle planning, Wi-Fi capacity, endpoint configuration, cloud platform integration, backup and recovery, incident handling and education-specific security controls. Participants use practical methods including service dependency mapping, RACI matrices, asset registers, risk scoring, service-level measures and change impact assessments. They will be able to translate curriculum and operational requirements into infrastructure priorities, controls and improvement plans.
Delivery combines instructor-led technical sessions with worked education-sector scenarios, including a campus outage, a one-to-one device deployment and a learning platform access incident. Participants analyse infrastructure evidence, make configuration and governance decisions, and test their decisions against teaching continuity, safeguarding and support constraints. Each participant leaves with an Education Technology Infrastructure Improvement Plan containing a current-state service map, risk register, target operating controls, lifecycle priorities and a 90-day action roadmap for their organisation.
The course is suited to intermediate IT professionals responsible for school, college, university or academy-trust technology services, as well as digital learning leaders who need to make informed infrastructure decisions with technical teams and suppliers.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience supporting or administering IT services in a school, college, university or comparable multi-user environment. Familiarity with TCP/IP networking, Wi-Fi terminology, user accounts and groups, endpoint operating systems, cloud software-as-a-service and basic information security concepts is assumed. Participants should be comfortable reading configuration summaries, asset lists and incident records, although they will not be required to configure production systems during the course. Prior use of Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Entra ID or Google Admin console is helpful but not essential. Programming, advanced network engineering, formal ITIL certification and specialist cyber security qualifications are not required.
Training methodology
The five-day programme uses instructor-led briefings to establish the operating models and controls used in education technology environments, followed by hands-on analysis of realistic service data. Participants work with sample network demand reports, device inventories, access policies, incident records and supplier service reports. Small groups resolve scenarios such as a high-stakes assessment outage and an unmanaged-device safeguarding concern, then defend their decisions against cost, continuity and user-impact criteria. Daily outputs are assembled into an individual Education Technology Infrastructure Improvement Plan and refined through instructor feedback on the final day.

Day 4: Service management, risk and supplier control

- Problem management techniques for recurring classroom technology failures
- Change enablement and change impact assessment for academic-calendar constraints
- Risk registers for cyber security, safeguarding, data protection and service continuity
