Jira Service Management (JSM) can become difficult to govern when service projects, request types, workflows, queues, SLAs and automations have been configured incrementally by different administrators. The result is often inconsistent employee or customer experience, unclear ownership, unreliable reporting and manual workarounds for incidents, access requests and asset-related tickets. This course addresses the practical configuration decisions that determine whether JSM operates as a controlled service management platform or simply as another ticketing queue.

Participants configure Jira Service Management Cloud around real IT service scenarios. They design service projects, portals and request types; build workflows with approvals and conditions; create JQL-powered queues; define SLA calendars and goals; connect knowledge content; configure Assets object schemas; and automate triage, escalation and fulfilment activities. The course also covers permissions, customer organisations, notification schemes, reporting, audit controls and configuration governance. Participants learn how to translate ITIL-aligned service processes into maintainable JSM configuration rather than copying default settings.

Training combines instructor demonstrations with guided administration labs in a sandbox environment. Each day uses a linked scenario involving an internal IT support organisation, so participants see how portal design, issue fields, workflow status, asset data, SLA measurement and automation rules affect one another. Working individually and in review groups, participants build a documented JSM service project configuration pack containing a service catalogue, workflow design, queue set, SLA model, Assets schema, automation rules and deployment checklist.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical experience using Jira or Jira Service Management, including navigating issues, creating and editing requests, using basic filters, and understanding projects, issue types, fields and workflows. Familiarity with IT service management concepts such as incidents, service requests, priorities, SLAs, approvals and knowledge articles is assumed. Participants should also be comfortable working in a browser-based administration interface and interpreting simple JQL queries. Prior scripting, software development, database administration or formal ITIL certification is not required. The course teaches configuration rather than end-user ticket handling.

Training methodology

The instructor introduces each configuration pattern in Jira Service Management Cloud, then participants implement it in a dedicated training sandbox. Labs progress from a service portal and request catalogue to workflows, SLAs, Assets and automation, using a single IT support case study throughout. Participants inspect configuration dependencies, troubleshoot deliberately flawed rules and review one another’s designs against operational requirements. Short design reviews connect platform choices to ITIL practices, reporting needs and access controls. The final sessions are a configuration clinic and an application-planning workshop for each participant’s own environment.

You should be comfortable using Jira issues, projects, fields and basic filters, and should understand common ITSM terms such as incident, request, SLA and approval. You do not need programming skills, database experience or an ITIL qualification.
