Course overview

HR managers are increasingly asked to turn employee interest in social and environmental causes into volunteering programmes that support business priorities, strengthen retention, and withstand scrutiny. Yet many schemes begin as ad hoc charity days with unclear eligibility, weak governance, inconsistent manager support, and no reliable evidence of impact. This course addresses the practical HR challenge of designing volunteering and corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity that is equitable, safe, measurable, and credible to employees, community partners, executives, and ESG reporting teams.

Participants learn how to build an employee volunteering strategy linked to material CSR priorities, workforce needs, and community outcomes. The course covers stakeholder mapping, needs assessment, volunteering policy design, paid volunteer leave models, charity-partner due diligence, safeguarding, health and safety controls, inclusion, communications, participation data, and impact measurement. Participants practise using logic models, KPI scorecards, employee surveys, volunteer-hour data, and basic social value measures to distinguish activity counts from meaningful outcomes.

Teaching combines instructor-led briefings with case analysis, policy clinics, Excel-based measurement workshops, and structured peer review. Throughout the week, participants develop a practical Employee Volunteering and CSR Programme Blueprint for their own organisation or a realistic case organisation. The completed blueprint includes governance roles, a policy outline, partner-selection criteria, risk controls, an annual activation plan, KPIs, and an executive-ready business case.

The course is suited to HR professionals who own employee experience, engagement, wellbeing, DEI, talent, or people sustainability activity and need to work confidently with CSR, sustainability, communications, legal, and health and safety colleagues. It is equally valuable for managers tasked with improving an existing volunteering offer that has high enthusiasm but limited consistency, participation data, or demonstrable community impact.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Assess employee, business and community needs using a stakeholder map and structured discovery questions
  • Design an employee volunteering policy covering eligibility, paid leave, approval routes, expenses and conduct
  • Build a CSR-aligned volunteering strategy using materiality priorities, a theory of change and annual objectives
  • Evaluate charity and community partners using due-diligence, safeguarding, insurance and capability criteria
  • Apply proportionate health, safety and safeguarding controls to office-based, virtual and community volunteering activities
  • Create an inclusive participation plan that addresses shift patterns, disability access, remote workers and manager approval bias
  • Construct a volunteering KPI scorecard using participation, retention, skills-based volunteering and community outcome measures
  • Present an executive business case and programme blueprint with governance, budget assumptions, risks and implementation milestones

Requirements and prerequisites

This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and does not require prior CSR qualifications, sustainability reporting experience, or responsibility for an existing volunteering programme. Participants should be comfortable discussing their organisation’s HR policies, employee population, approval processes, and current community or charity activity. Familiarity with basic Excel tables and percentages is helpful for the measurement sessions, but advanced spreadsheet skills are not assumed. Complete beginners should expect to learn the core CSR, social-impact and employee-volunteering terminology before applying it. No specialist software, legal qualification, accounting knowledge, or prior use of GRI Standards is required.

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor-led modules to establish CSR, HR governance and social-impact concepts, followed by applied workshops using realistic employee-volunteering scenarios. Participants assess a charity partner’s evidence, identify risks in a volunteering event, draft policy clauses, and build an Excel KPI scorecard from sample participation data. Small groups review case programmes from different workforce settings, including hybrid, shift-based and multi-site organisations. Each day advances the participant’s own Programme Blueprint, with facilitator feedback and a final implementation-planning clinic.

A laptop is strongly recommended for the policy, scorecard and blueprint workshops. Participants use Microsoft Excel for basic participation and KPI analysis; templates and sample data are provided, and no advanced formulas are required.

No. It suits HR managers starting from informal charity events as well as those improving an established programme. CSR, employee experience, DEI and L&D professionals can also attend when they work with HR on participation, policy or impact.

This course concentrates on the HR operating model for employee volunteering: policy, paid leave, manager decisions, inclusion, partner controls and employee data. ESG reporting is addressed only where it helps participants make credible claims and provide useful programme evidence.

You can use the policy outline, partner due-diligence criteria, risk controls and KPI scorecard to review an existing scheme or launch a pilot. The final 90-day roadmap identifies the stakeholders, approvals and evidence needed for the next implementation step.

You leave with an Employee Volunteering and CSR Programme Blueprint tailored to your organisation or a detailed case organisation. It includes a governance model, policy structure, partner-selection process, measurement plan, business-case content and implementation milestones.
