Course overview
Environmental managers are expected to maintain permits, prevent non-compliance, provide credible environmental data, and explain performance to regulators, executives, customers, and communities. The difficulty is rarely a lack of data alone: requirements are distributed across legislation, permit conditions, monitoring plans, waste records, emissions inventories, contractor reports, and management-system procedures. This course helps managers turn those sources into a controlled compliance and reporting process that identifies obligations, assigns accountability, tests evidence quality, escalates gaps, and produces defensible reports.
Participants work through the full environmental compliance cycle, from establishing a legal and other requirements register to planning monitoring, evaluating compliance, investigating deviations, and reporting performance. They learn to build compliance obligation matrices, set reporting boundaries, apply materiality and data-quality checks, calculate selected environmental indicators, manage corrective actions, and prepare reports aligned with ISO 14001:2015, ISO 14031:2021, and the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard. Particular attention is given to evidence trails, version control, regulatory reporting calendars, permit-condition tracking, and management review dashboards.
Delivery combines instructor-led analysis with practical exercises based on operating-site scenarios, including an emissions exceedance, incomplete waste-transfer documentation, and inconsistent utility data. Participants use structured templates and Microsoft Excel to reconcile source data, assess compliance status, and prepare an executive-ready report. Each participant leaves with a tailored Environmental Compliance and Reporting Action Plan containing a draft obligations register, reporting calendar, KPI set, evidence-control approach, and 90-day implementation priorities for their own organisation.
The course is designed for experienced environmental practitioners moving into management responsibility, as well as environmental managers seeking a more disciplined and auditable approach to multi-site compliance and sustainability reporting.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience with environmental controls, site operations, compliance records, or management-system activities. They should understand basic concepts such as environmental aspects and impacts, permits, waste classification, emissions or effluent monitoring, and corrective actions. Familiarity with spreadsheet work, including entering formulas, filtering tables and preparing simple charts in Microsoft Excel, is expected. Participants should bring awareness of their organisation's key environmental obligations or reporting challenges where possible. Prior ISO 14001 lead-auditor training, carbon-accounting certification, legal qualifications, specialist environmental sampling expertise, or advanced statistical skills are not required.
Training methodology
The five-day programme alternates focused instructor-led sessions with structured application. Participants dissect permits, legal registers, monitoring records, waste documentation and reporting extracts from realistic site cases; then use supplied templates to build registers, RACI charts, data-validation checks and dashboards. Small-group workshops compare evidence sufficiency and corrective-action decisions, while facilitated reviews test how findings should be escalated to leadership. Daily outputs are progressively assembled into an individual Environmental Compliance and Reporting Action Plan, which is peer reviewed and refined on the final day.

Day 1: Building the environmental compliance control framework

Day 2: Monitoring systems and environmental data quality

Workshop: Participants reconcile a multi-site utility and waste dataset in Microsoft Excel, identify anomalies and produce a documented data-quality review.
Day 3: Compliance evaluation, assurance and corrective action
