Course overview

Executive leaders are routinely asked to approve budgets, investments, forecasts, restructuring plans, and corrective actions without being finance specialists. The risk is not simply making a poor commercial decision: it is approving an initiative with weak assumptions, missing controls, unclear accountability, or financial reporting implications that emerge too late. This course equips managers to act as informed financial stewards who can challenge numbers constructively, recognise governance gaps, and connect financial decisions to organisational strategy, risk appetite, and stakeholder obligations.

Participants learn how financial statements, management accounts, budgets, cash-flow forecasts, capital expenditure proposals, and performance dashboards support executive decisions. They practise interpreting profitability, liquidity, working capital, return, variance, and scenario-analysis measures; testing the assumptions behind business cases; and distinguishing an operational issue from a control or governance failure. The programme also addresses board and committee responsibilities, delegated authority, internal control, financial reporting integrity, fraud-risk indicators, and the use of COSO and IFRS principles in executive oversight.

Delivery combines instructor-led explanation with realistic executive-management cases, spreadsheet analysis, governance discussions, and decision workshops. Participants work through a simulated management pack, challenge a capital-investment proposal, investigate a forecast variance, and formulate an escalation response to a control failure. They leave with an Executive Financial Stewardship Action Plan containing a financial-review checklist, a governance escalation map, priority performance measures, and actions to strengthen oversight within their own function.

The course is particularly valuable for senior operational leaders, functional heads, programme sponsors, and aspiring executives whose decisions affect budgets, resources, controls, or organisational risk.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret income statements, balance sheets, cash-flow statements, and management accounts for executive decision-making
  • Calculate and explain liquidity, profitability, leverage, working-capital, return-on-investment, and variance measures
  • Challenge budget, forecast, and business-case assumptions using sensitivity and scenario analysis
  • Evaluate capital expenditure proposals using payback, net present value, internal rate of return, and risk-adjusted assumptions
  • Apply delegated-authority, segregation-of-duties, and approval-control principles to financial decisions
  • Identify control deficiencies, fraud-risk indicators, and financial-reporting red flags requiring escalation
  • Use COSO control components and IFRS reporting principles to frame executive oversight questions
  • Produce an Executive Financial Stewardship Action Plan with review routines, escalation triggers, and governance actions

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Build confidence to question financial assumptions and management-reporting narratives in senior meetings
  • Strengthen credibility as a budget holder who understands both commercial performance and control obligations
  • Develop a repeatable method for reviewing investment proposals before committing organisational funds
  • Gain practical language for escalating financial, control, and reporting concerns to finance leaders or governance committees
  • Create a role-specific stewardship action plan that demonstrates readiness for broader executive accountability

For your organisation

  • Improve the quality and consistency of budget, forecast, and investment decisions made by non-finance leaders
  • Reduce avoidable expenditure by requiring clearer assumptions, sensitivities, benefits measures, and approval evidence
  • Strengthen first-line ownership of internal controls, delegated authority, and timely issue escalation
  • Increase earlier detection of adverse variances, cash-pressure signals, and weak business-case logic
  • Create a common executive vocabulary for discussing financial performance, risk appetite, and governance responsibilities

Who should attend

  • General Managers — who hold budget accountability and must convert operating results into timely decisions
  • Functional Heads — who approve expenditure, forecasts, and resource plans across their departments
  • Programme and Portfolio Directors — who sponsor investment initiatives and need to govern benefits, costs, and risk
  • Operations Directors — who must manage working capital, performance variance, and control discipline in delivery teams
  • Aspiring Executives — who need a practical financial-governance foundation before assuming enterprise leadership roles
  • Senior Project Sponsors — who must scrutinise business cases, funding requests, and benefits-realisation assumptions

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have experience managing a team, function, project, budget line, or operational plan and should be comfortable reading basic tables, percentages, and charts. Familiarity with common terms such as revenue, cost, budget, forecast, cash flow, profit, and variance is helpful. Participants should bring examples of the management reports or decisions they encounter, where organisational policy permits. Advanced accounting, audit, corporate-finance, or Excel modelling expertise is not required. The course explains financial statements and governance concepts from an executive user’s perspective rather than training participants to prepare statutory accounts.

Training methodology

The programme uses instructor-led financial briefings followed by applied executive-management exercises. Participants interpret a simulated monthly management pack in Microsoft Excel, identify the drivers behind profit and cash variances, and present challenge questions for a finance review meeting. Small groups assess a capital proposal using scenario assumptions and investment-appraisal measures, then map approval controls and escalation routes against a governance case. Facilitated debriefs connect each exercise to COSO and IFRS principles. On day five, each participant builds a practical stewardship action plan for their own accountability area.

Course outline

Day 1: Financial stewardship in executive leadership

  • Executive accountability for financial performance, risk, and stewardship
  • The relationship between strategy, operating plans, budgets, and resource allocation
  • Income statement structure and profit-driver analysis
  • Balance sheet structure, capital employed, and financial position
  • Cash-flow statement interpretation and liquidity management
  • Management accounts versus statutory financial reporting
  • Executive questions for monthly performance-review meetings

Workshop: Participants review a simulated management pack and produce a one-page list of performance questions, decision priorities, and escalation points for an executive review.

Day 2: Planning, forecasting, and performance control

  • Budget construction, ownership, and accountability assumptions
  • Rolling forecasts and forecast-accuracy disciplines
  • Actual-versus-budget variance analysis by price, volume, mix, and timing
  • Key performance indicators and leading versus lagging measures
  • Working-capital drivers including receivables, inventory, and payables
  • Liquidity indicators, cash-conversion cycle, and short-term cash risk
  • Scenario planning and sensitivity analysis in Microsoft Excel

Workshop: Participants analyse a forecast variance workbook and produce a management response that separates operational actions, forecast revisions, and risks requiring escalation.

Day 3: Investment decisions and commercial challenge

  • Business-case structure: strategic case, economic case, financial case, and delivery case
  • Capital expenditure versus operating expenditure treatment
  • Payback period and accounting rate of return limitations
  • Net present value and discounted cash-flow analysis
  • Internal rate of return and hurdle-rate considerations
  • Benefits realisation, cost ownership, and post-investment review
  • Assumption challenge, optimism bias, and downside-case testing

Workshop: Teams evaluate a capital-investment proposal using payback, net present value, and downside scenarios, then prepare a recommendation for an investment committee.

Day 4: Governance, controls, and financial integrity

  • Board, executive committee, audit committee, and management responsibilities
  • Delegated authority matrices and approval thresholds
  • Segregation of duties and conflict-of-interest safeguards
  • COSO Internal Control—Integrated Framework components
  • Financial reporting integrity and relevant IFRS reporting principles
  • Fraud-risk indicators, management override, and whistleblowing routes
  • Control deficiency classification, remediation ownership, and escalation

Workshop: Participants diagnose control failures in a procurement-and-payment case and produce a control remediation and governance escalation map.

Day 5: Executive reporting and applied stewardship plan

  • Designing concise executive dashboards in Microsoft Power BI
  • Selecting decision-useful financial and non-financial indicators
  • Narrative reporting: explaining drivers, risks, actions, and decisions required

Frequently asked questions

No. You need practical familiarity with budgets, reports, or operational decisions, but not formal accounting training. Financial statements and investment measures are taught from the perspective of an executive who must interpret, challenge, and govern decisions rather than prepare accounts.

A laptop is strongly recommended for the Excel-based variance, cash-flow, and investment exercises in live online delivery and useful in the classroom. Participants do not need specialist accounting software; templates and case materials are provided.

It is designed for leaders with budget, operational, project, programme, or functional accountability. It is especially relevant to managers moving into roles where they approve spend, review forecasts, sponsor investments, or report to executive and governance forums.

This course focuses on executive stewardship: using financial information to make decisions, test proposals, manage controls, and escalate risks. It does not train participants to prepare ledgers, close accounts, value securities, or build advanced corporate-finance models.

Participants can use the management-pack review questions, forecast challenge method, business-case checklist, and control escalation map in their next budget or performance meeting. The final action plan is structured around the participant's own function or accountability area.

Participants leave with completed Excel exercises, an investment-review template, a governance escalation map, and an Executive Financial Stewardship Action Plan. These materials can be adapted to local reporting cycles, delegated-authority rules, and committee requirements.
