Course overview
Cloud expenditure often grows faster than the organisation’s ability to explain it. Engineering teams need capacity and delivery speed; finance teams need accurate forecasts, allocation and accountability; procurement teams need evidence for commitment decisions. Without a shared FinOps operating model, cost reports become retrospective, tagging remains inconsistent, unit economics are unavailable, and optimisation work is treated as an occasional clean-up rather than a managed business practice.
This five-day FinOps Cloud Cost Management Framework Training Course teaches participants to establish and run a practical FinOps capability across cloud financial management, engineering and business stakeholders. Participants apply the FinOps Framework domains of Inform, Optimise and Operate; build allocation and showback structures; analyse usage and cost data; forecast spend and variance; assess commitment-based discounts; define optimisation workflows; and measure unit costs linked to products, customers or services. The course uses AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud examples while focusing on methods transferable across cloud estates.
Instruction combines focused tutor-led sessions with guided analysis of realistic billing extracts, allocation problems, forecasting scenarios and commitment decisions. Working in cross-functional teams, participants produce a FinOps operating blueprint for a representative organisation: stakeholder roles, cost allocation rules, KPI set, reporting cadence, optimisation backlog, governance controls and a 90-day implementation plan. The resulting pack can be adapted directly for a participant’s own cloud environment and used to brief finance, engineering and leadership teams.
The course is designed for practitioners who already work with cloud platforms, financial data or technology operations and need to turn cloud-cost visibility into accountable, repeatable action. It is particularly valuable where multiple teams share cloud services, chargeback is under consideration, cloud commitments are increasing, or leadership requires reliable cloud spend forecasts and value measures.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Apply the FinOps Framework to define Inform, Optimise and Operate practices for a cloud-cost management programme
- Design a cloud cost-allocation model using accounts, subscriptions, projects, tags, labels and shared-cost rules
- Build a showback reporting pack that maps cloud spend to business units, products, environments and owners
- Analyse cloud billing data to identify cost drivers, anomalies, idle resources and rightsizing opportunities
- Create monthly cloud spend forecasts using run-rate, seasonality, planned change and variance assumptions
- Evaluate Savings Plans, Reserved Instances and committed-use discounts using utilisation, coverage and break-even analysis
- Define unit-economics measures such as cost per customer, transaction, workload or product feature
- Produce a 90-day FinOps operating plan with roles, KPIs, optimisation backlog, governance cadence and decision checkpoints

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical exposure to at least one public cloud platform and understand basic cloud service concepts such as compute, storage, networking, accounts or subscriptions, and consumption-based pricing. Familiarity with spreadsheets and interpreting monthly cost or usage reports is expected. Experience with AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management, Google Cloud Billing, or a FinOps tool is useful but not essential. Participants do not need to write code, administer cloud infrastructure, hold a cloud certification, or have formal accounting qualifications. The course explains financial concepts such as allocation, accruals, variance and forecasting in a cloud-management context.
Training methodology
The programme uses instructor-led FinOps Framework briefings followed by hands-on work with realistic cloud billing extracts and reporting scenarios. Participants examine AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management and Google Cloud Billing views, then compare how allocation, forecasting and optimisation decisions work across providers. Small-group workshops address shared-cost allocation, anomaly investigation, commitment analysis and stakeholder negotiation. Each day closes with a practical artefact, and the final day assembles these into a 90-day FinOps implementation plan for application in the participant’s own organisation.

Workshop: Participants assess a representative organisation’s cloud-cost maturity and produce a stakeholder map with priority capability gaps.
Day 2: Allocation, reporting and cost accountability

- Shared-service allocation methods for platforms, networks and security tooling

Workshop: Participants create an allocation rulebook and a monthly showback dashboard specification for a multi-team cloud estate.
Day 3: Optimisation analysis and engineering action

Workshop: Participants investigate a cloud-cost spike, identify root causes and produce a prioritised optimisation backlog with owners and expected savings.
Day 4: Forecasting, commitments and unit economics

- Forecast adjustments for seasonality, launches, migrations and architectural change
- Budget variance analysis and forecast confidence ranges
- AWS Savings Plans and Reserved Instances evaluation
- Azure Reservations and savings plan assessment

Workshop: Participants build a forecast and commitment recommendation, then calculate unit-cost measures for a cloud-hosted digital service.
Day 5: Operating the FinOps practice
