Course overview
Operations managers make people decisions every day: assigning shifts, addressing attendance, handling capability concerns, balancing production targets with staffing levels, and responding when team behaviour affects safety, quality or customer service. Without practical HR management skills, these decisions can become inconsistent, poorly documented or escalated too late. This five-day course equips operations managers to manage people fairly while protecting operational continuity, employee relations and organisational standards.
Participants learn how to translate workforce requirements into staffing plans, recruit and onboard frontline employees, set measurable performance expectations, manage attendance and conduct difficult conversations. The course covers structured one-to-ones, performance improvement plans, absence review meetings, disciplinary fact-finding, grievance handling, rota controls and workforce metrics. Participants also learn when a matter should be handled locally and when it must be referred to HR, senior management or specialist legal advice.
Delivery combines instructor-led teaching with operations-based case studies, document reviews, role-played management conversations and practical workshops. Participants work with realistic shift patterns, attendance records, performance data and employee scenarios rather than generic HR examples. They leave with an Operations People Management Toolkit containing a workforce plan, team performance scorecard, attendance-review template, investigation checklist, conversation planner and a 90-day implementation plan for their own area.
The course is designed for managers responsible for frontline, shift-based, technical, logistics, manufacturing, service or field teams. It is particularly valuable for operational leaders who have acquired people-management responsibility without formal HR training and need reliable methods they can apply immediately.

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Operations Managers — who lead frontline teams and must balance people decisions with service, output and safety targets
- Production Managers — who need consistent methods for managing attendance, skills coverage and performance on shifts
- Warehouse and Logistics Managers — who supervise variable workforces, rota patterns and time-critical operations
- Customer Service Managers — who manage team performance, conduct concerns and employee retention in service environments
- Facilities and Field Service Managers — who need clear processes for distributed teams, absence and capability issues
- Newly Appointed Line Managers — who have inherited people-management responsibilities and require practical HR methods
Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and does not require prior HR qualifications or experience with a specific HR information system. Participants should have current or planned responsibility for supervising employees, allocating work, reviewing performance or escalating people issues. Familiarity with basic operational measures such as headcount, overtime, absenteeism, productivity and shift rotas is useful. Participants should be comfortable reading simple spreadsheets and internal policies. A complete beginner can attend; they should expect to learn core HR management processes and how to work appropriately with their organisation's HR team, rather than provide legal advice or replace specialist HR support.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short teaching sessions to introduce each management process, followed by practical application to operational scenarios such as repeated short-term absence, a missed productivity target, a conduct complaint and a last-minute skills shortage. Participants analyse sample rotas, attendance logs and performance records, then practise conversations in paired role plays using observation checklists. Small groups compare response options against policy, fairness and business impact. Each day produces a working template, culminating in an individual 90-day action plan reviewed by the instructor.
