Course overview
HR teams are expected to recruit reliably, maintain accurate employee records, support managers through sensitive people issues, and apply policies consistently. Yet many HR practitioners enter the function through administration, payroll, recruitment, or line-management roles without a structured grounding in the full employee lifecycle. This creates avoidable risks: incomplete documentation, inconsistent onboarding, poorly handled performance conversations, and decisions that cannot be explained against policy or employment-law principles.
This five-day Human Resource Management Fundamentals Training Course builds practical capability across core HR operations and advisory work. Participants learn to map the employee lifecycle; write role profiles and recruitment criteria; structure selection and onboarding processes; maintain compliant personnel records; support performance and absence management; and prepare for disciplinary, grievance, and employee-relations cases. The course also covers workforce data, HR metrics, policy design, confidentiality, equality, and the limits of an HR practitioner’s authority when legal or specialist advice is required.
Delivery combines instructor-led teaching with HR case files, document reviews, role-played manager conversations, spreadsheet exercises, and group workshops. Participants work with realistic templates for job descriptions, interview scoring matrices, onboarding checklists, performance-review records, case notes, and HR dashboards. By the end of the week, each participant leaves with a practical HR Operations Action Pack: a mapped employee lifecycle, a set of editable HR templates, and a 90-day plan for strengthening one process in their own organisation.
The course is suited to HR officers, administrators, coordinators, newly appointed HR generalists, and operational managers who carry people-management responsibilities. It is particularly valuable for organisations seeking more consistent HR practice without requiring participants to be employment-law specialists.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Map the employee lifecycle and identify HR control points from recruitment through exit
- Draft job descriptions, person specifications, and competency-based selection criteria

Target competencies
Who should attend
- HR Officers — who need to administer core people processes accurately and consistently
- HR Administrators — who manage employee records, letters, onboarding, and policy documentation
- HR Coordinators — who support recruitment, reporting, and day-to-day HR operations
- New HR Generalists — who need a structured working knowledge of the full employee lifecycle
- Office or Operations Managers — who have inherited people-management responsibilities alongside operational duties
- Line Managers — who need to apply HR policies fairly in recruitment, performance, absence, and conduct matters
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have basic workplace experience and familiarity with routine people processes such as hiring, onboarding, leave requests, probation, or performance reviews. They should be comfortable reading organisational policies, working with Word documents, and entering simple figures in Excel spreadsheets. Prior HR qualifications, experience with a specific HR information system, payroll knowledge, or formal employment-law study are not required. Complete beginners are welcome, but should expect to work through realistic HR documents and manager scenarios rather than receive a purely theoretical introduction. Participants should bring examples of non-confidential HR forms or processes they would like to improve, where permitted.
Training methodology
The course is delivered through facilitated classroom or live-online sessions led by an experienced HR practitioner. Short teaching modules establish the framework, then participants apply it to realistic HR work: reviewing a job brief, scoring interview evidence, correcting personnel-file gaps, preparing an absence case, and responding to a grievance scenario. Small-group discussions compare defensible HR decisions against policy and risk criteria. Each day closes with a practical output, and the final session turns these outputs into a focused 90-day HR process improvement plan for the participant’s workplace.
