Course overview
In-house counsel are expected to give commercially useful advice while controlling legal spend, managing outside counsel, improving contract throughput and demonstrating the legal function’s contribution to business outcomes. This requires more than technical legal knowledge. Counsel must decide which work should be handled internally, escalated, automated or sent to a panel firm; translate legal risk into business choices; and use operational data to defend priorities, budgets and resourcing decisions.
This five-day course develops the operating and advisory capabilities needed to run a more effective in-house legal service. Participants apply legal intake and triage models, matter management workflows, outside counsel panel governance, e-billing controls, contract lifecycle management principles, legal risk registers and dashboard design. They practise structuring executive-ready advice, setting service levels, selecting meaningful legal KPIs and building a business case for process or technology change.
Teaching combines instructor-led legal operations frameworks with realistic corporate casework, including high-volume contracting, regulatory investigations, disputes and constrained legal budgets. Participants work with sample matter, spend and contract data; assess operating-model choices; and rehearse advisory conversations with business stakeholders. Each participant leaves with a tailored Legal Operations and Advisory Improvement Plan containing a current-state diagnosis, priority initiatives, governance measures, KPI set, implementation roadmap and stakeholder communication plan.
The course is designed for experienced legal professionals moving beyond individual matter handling into legal-function leadership, as well as legal operations specialists who need stronger advisory and governance capability. It is equally valuable where a legal department is formalising its operating model, introducing legal technology, rationalising external counsel or seeking clearer evidence of value delivered to the business.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Design a legal intake and triage workflow using risk, value, urgency and complexity criteria
- Build a matter management taxonomy that supports workload analysis, reporting and retention controls
- Create an outside counsel panel scorecard covering cost, quality, diversity, responsiveness and outcomes
- Apply e-billing rules and budget-to-actual variance analysis to control external legal spend
- Develop a legal KPI dashboard using service-level, cycle-time, spend and risk indicators
- Structure executive legal advice using options, risk appetite, decision rights and recommended actions
- Prepare a legal technology business case with process baseline, benefits measures, costs and implementation risks
- Produce a Legal Operations and Advisory Improvement Plan with prioritised initiatives and a 90-day roadmap
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for turning legal workload and spend data into defensible management decisions
- Build credibility with business leaders by presenting legal risk as choices, trade-offs and recommended actions
- Strengthen readiness for Legal Operations Manager, Deputy General Counsel or Head of Legal responsibilities
- Learn to challenge outside counsel performance using agreed metrics rather than anecdotal feedback
- Leave with a practical improvement plan that can be presented to a General Counsel or legal leadership team
For your organisation

- Improve responsiveness to business stakeholders through defined intake, triage, ownership and service-level processes
- Create more consistent legal risk reporting for executive committees, boards and business-unit leaders
- Prioritise legal technology investment against measurable process bottlenecks and expected benefits
- Increase visibility of legal demand, capacity and matter outcomes to support better resourcing decisions
Target competencies
Who should attend
- In-House Counsel — who must balance practical business advice with workload, risk and spend control
- Senior Legal Counsel — who are preparing to lead portfolios, teams or legal-function improvement initiatives
- General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel — who need an operating model that makes legal performance visible to executives
- Legal Operations Managers — who need to connect process, technology and data initiatives to legal advice delivery
- Head of Legal — who are rationalising outside counsel, legal technology or internal service arrangements
- Compliance and Corporate Governance Managers — who work with legal teams on risk reporting, investigations and assurance
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience working in an in-house legal department, legal operations function or closely related compliance role. They should understand the lifecycle of a legal matter or contract, the role of external counsel, basic legal privilege and confidentiality considerations, and routine reporting in Excel or a similar spreadsheet tool. Familiarity with a matter management, e-billing or contract lifecycle management system is helpful but not essential. This is not a legal drafting course and does not require coding, finance qualifications, Power BI expertise or prior experience implementing legal technology.
Training methodology
The course uses short instructor-led briefings followed by applied legal-department exercises. Participants map a legal request journey, classify a sample matter portfolio, interrogate external-spend data and design panel governance controls. Case studies cover contract backlogs, investigations, disputes and technology investment decisions, requiring participants to advise a simulated executive stakeholder. Small-group workshops compare operating-model choices and challenge assumptions. On the final day, participants consolidate their work into a role-relevant Legal Operations and Advisory Improvement Plan and receive structured peer and instructor feedback.
