Course overview
Human governance failures rarely begin with a single HR policy. They emerge when decision rights are unclear, workforce risks are not escalated, people data is unreliable, or leaders cannot show how employment practices support organisational purpose and stakeholder expectations. ISO 30408 provides a structured way to govern human resources as an enterprise responsibility rather than an administrative function. This course helps HR leaders and governance professionals translate the standard into operating practices that can withstand executive, board, audit and regulatory scrutiny.
Participants examine the principles, governance roles and recommended practices in ISO 30408:2016, then build an implementation approach suited to their organisation. They learn to define human governance accountabilities; map decision rights; establish HR governance forums; connect workforce measures to strategic objectives; identify people-related risks; and design reporting, assurance and escalation arrangements. The course also addresses the relationship between ISO 30408, workforce reporting under ISO 30414, and risk management using ISO 31000.
Teaching combines instructor-led interpretation of the standard with implementation workshops, case analysis and peer review. Participants work through a realistic organisation-wide human governance scenario, using governance charters, RACI matrices, risk registers, KPI definitions and reporting templates. Each participant leaves with an ISO 30408 Human Governance Implementation Pack: a prioritised gap assessment, target governance model, 90-day implementation roadmap and draft measures for presenting to senior leadership.
The course is designed for experienced HR, people-risk, governance and assurance professionals who need to lead or support a formal human governance implementation, not simply refresh HR policy knowledge.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Interpret ISO 30408:2016 principles and guidelines in relation to organisational governance responsibilities
- Conduct an ISO 30408 gap assessment using an evidence-based maturity assessment matrix
- Design a human governance operating model with defined accountabilities, committees and escalation routes
- Build a RACI matrix that assigns people-related decision rights across boards, executives, HR and line management
- Develop a workforce risk register with risk owners, controls, indicators and escalation thresholds
- Specify human capital measures and reporting definitions aligned with ISO 30414 and organisational objectives
- Draft a human governance charter covering mandate, membership, meeting cadence and reporting obligations
- Produce a 90-day ISO 30408 implementation roadmap with priorities, dependencies, milestones and assurance activities
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for leading an ISO 30408 implementation rather than relying on disconnected HR policy reviews
- Build credibility in board-facing discussions by linking workforce governance, risk, controls and organisational performance
- Learn to produce governance artefacts such as charters, RACI matrices and escalation frameworks that senior leaders can approve
- Strengthen capability to assess whether HR decision-making is accountable, evidenced and consistently monitored
- Develop a portfolio-ready implementation pack that demonstrates practical expertise in human governance
For your organisation
- Creates clearer accountability for workforce decisions across the board, executive team, HR and line management
- Reduces people-related compliance and conduct risk through defined controls, owners and escalation thresholds
- Improves the quality and consistency of workforce reporting used in strategic and governance decisions
- Provides an evidence-based baseline and roadmap for adopting ISO 30408 practices at an appropriate pace
- Enables more effective internal audit and assurance of HR governance arrangements and management actions
Target competencies
Who should attend
- HR Directors and Heads of People — who need to establish accountable oversight of workforce strategy and employment practices
- HR Business Partners — who translate enterprise governance requirements into operational people decisions
- People Risk and Compliance Managers — who must identify, monitor and report workforce-related control failures
- Corporate Governance Managers — who need to integrate human governance into board and committee structures
- Internal Audit Managers — who assess the design and operating effectiveness of HR governance controls
- Chief People Officers and Senior HR Leaders — who require a defensible implementation plan for executive or board approval
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience in HR management, people operations, governance, risk, compliance or internal audit, and be familiar with their organisation’s HR policies, reporting lines and workforce metrics. An ability to read policy documents, analyse process maps and work with spreadsheet-based registers is assumed. Prior exposure to board reporting, enterprise risk management or ISO management standards is helpful but not mandatory. Participants do not need to be certified ISO auditors, lawyers or data analysts, and no specialist HR information system configuration experience is required. A laptop with spreadsheet and document-editing software is recommended for workshop activities.
Training methodology
The programme uses short instructor-led briefings to interpret ISO 30408, followed by workshops that apply each guideline to a realistic organisational case. Participants analyse governance evidence, map decision rights in a RACI matrix, score a maturity assessment, construct a people-risk register and define reporting measures. Small-group critique sessions test whether proposed controls are practical for boards, HR leaders and operational managers. On the final day, each participant converts their work into a 90-day implementation plan and receives facilitator feedback on priorities, dependencies and stakeholder engagement.
