Course overview

Psychosocial hazards such as excessive workload, unclear roles, bullying, poor change management, remote-work isolation and traumatic-event exposure can damage health, increase absence, weaken retention and contribute to safety incidents. Many organisations acknowledge these issues but lack a repeatable method for identifying risks, consulting workers, selecting controls and demonstrating that actions are working. This course equips HSE and people-management professionals to manage psychosocial risks as part of an occupational health and safety management system rather than treating wellbeing as a stand-alone initiative.

Participants work through ISO 45003:2021 guidance and its relationship to ISO 45001:2018. They learn to define psychosocial hazard categories, plan confidential worker consultation, use surveys and focus groups appropriately, assess likelihood and consequence, evaluate existing controls, and build risk treatment plans. The course addresses organisational, team and individual-level controls, with particular attention to work design, leadership behaviours, conflict, fatigue, change, violence and harassment. Participants also learn how to set leading and lagging indicators, investigate psychosocial contributors to incidents and review performance through management-system processes.

Teaching combines instructor-led interpretation of the standard with facilitated risk-assessment workshops, case analysis and practical document development. Participants use a psychosocial risk register, control-selection matrix and action-plan template to analyse a realistic workplace scenario. They leave with a structured ISO 45003 implementation pack: a psychosocial hazard profile, consultation plan, scored risk register, prioritised control actions, performance measures and a 90-day application plan suitable for adaptation within their own organisation.

The course is suited to professionals who need to establish, improve or assure psychosocial risk controls across operational, office-based, hybrid or high-exposure work environments. It serves both practitioners responsible for implementation and managers who must allocate resources, oversee legal and HSE obligations, and evidence informed decisions to workers, auditors and senior leadership.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret ISO 45003:2021 guidance and map its requirements to an ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management system
  • Identify psychosocial hazards using work-design, organisational-context and worker-exposure categories
  • Plan confidential worker consultation using surveys, focus groups, interviews and representative participation methods
  • Construct a psychosocial risk register with hazard statements, exposed groups, existing controls and risk ratings
  • Evaluate psychosocial controls using the hierarchy of controls and a control-effectiveness review
  • Develop risk treatment actions for workload, role clarity, change, bullying, fatigue, remote work and traumatic events
  • Define leading and lagging psychosocial performance indicators for monitoring and management review
  • Produce an ISO 45003 implementation pack containing a consultation plan, risk register, action plan and 90-day roadmap

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Build a defensible method for translating worker wellbeing concerns into assessed occupational health and safety risks
  • Gain practical confidence applying ISO 45003 alongside ISO 45001 during risk reviews, audits and management meetings
  • Create consultation and confidentiality approaches that improve the quality of psychosocial risk evidence
  • Strengthen credibility when advising leaders on workload, change, bullying, fatigue and work-design controls
  • Leave with reusable templates for a psychosocial risk register, control plan, indicators and implementation roadmap

For your organisation

  • Establish a documented, repeatable process for identifying and treating psychosocial hazards across business units
  • Improve the quality of decisions on workload, staffing, change and conduct by using structured worker evidence
  • Connect wellbeing initiatives to risk controls, accountable owners, due dates and management-system review
  • Reduce exposure to absence, turnover, grievances and safety failures linked to unmanaged psychosocial conditions
  • Provide auditable evidence of alignment between psychosocial risk arrangements and ISO 45003 guidance

Who should attend

  • HSE Managers — who must integrate psychosocial hazards into organisational risk-management and assurance processes
  • Occupational Health Professionals — who advise on work-related mental health exposures and preventative controls
  • HR Managers and Business Partners — who shape workload, conduct, change and employee-relations practices
  • Health and Safety Advisers — who conduct risk assessments and support managers with control implementation
  • Operations and Line Managers — who control day-to-day work design, team capacity and escalation arrangements
  • Internal Auditors and ISO 45001 Leads — who need to evaluate psychosocial risk arrangements against management-system expectations

Requirements and prerequisites

This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and does not require prior study of ISO 45003. Participants should be comfortable discussing workplace hazards, controls and basic risk-assessment concepts such as likelihood, consequence and residual risk. Familiarity with their organisation’s HSE policy, incident-reporting process or ISO 45001 system is useful but not essential. A complete beginner can attend and should expect guided explanations of the standard and risk tools before applying them. No clinical psychology qualification, counselling experience, legal qualification, specialist wellbeing platform or statistical software is required.

Training methodology

The five-day programme alternates focused instructor-led sessions on ISO 45003 clauses and guidance with applied workshops. Participants examine case evidence from workload, bullying, organisational change and high-exposure work settings; practise converting concerns into clear hazard statements; and score risks using a structured register. Small groups test consultation methods, select controls through a hierarchy-of-controls lens and define indicators for management review. Each participant progressively builds an implementation pack for a chosen workplace or supplied case, then completes a facilitated 90-day action-planning session.

Frequently asked questions

No. The course explains how ISO 45003 connects to ISO 45001 and introduces the psychosocial risk concepts used throughout. Basic familiarity with workplace risk assessment is helpful, but clinical mental health expertise is not expected or required.

A laptop is recommended for adapting the consultation-plan, risk-register and action-plan templates during workshops. The course uses standard spreadsheet-based tools and does not require access to a specialist wellbeing or survey platform.

It is designed for HSE, occupational health, HR, operations and internal-audit professionals who influence work design or risk controls. It is particularly useful where an organisation needs a structured response to workload, change, conduct, fatigue or workforce wellbeing concerns.

Mental health awareness courses commonly focus on recognising distress and having supportive conversations. This course focuses on organisational prevention: identifying psychosocial hazards, consulting workers, assessing risks, selecting controls and measuring whether those controls work under ISO 45003.

You can use the course templates to scope a psychosocial risk review, run a worker-consultation process and document control actions with accountable owners. The 90-day roadmap helps translate the course work into staged implementation within your existing HSE or ISO 45001 cycle.

Participants leave with an ISO 45003 implementation pack developed through the course. It includes a psychosocial hazard profile, consultation plan, scored risk register, control-action matrix, indicator set and 90-day implementation roadmap.
