Course overview
Mining operations face a distinctive HSE challenge: high-energy mobile equipment, ground instability, explosives, confined spaces, dust, water management and tailings facilities can combine to create low-frequency, high-consequence events. Managers and HSE professionals must do more than maintain registers and investigate incidents; they must show that critical controls work in the field, environmental obligations are being met, and tailings risks are governed with clear accountability. This course addresses the practical gap between an HSE management system on paper and reliable operational control at mine sites and processing facilities.
Participants examine how to build and improve an integrated mining HSE management system using ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 principles, risk-based planning and assurance methods. They practise task risk assessment, BowTie analysis, critical-control verification, incident investigation, legal-compliance evaluation, emergency preparedness and environmental aspect-impact assessment. Dedicated tailings content covers the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), consequence classification, governance roles, trigger action response plans and escalation of abnormal conditions.
Teaching combines instructor-led technical sessions with mine-based scenarios, group workshops and structured review of real operating controls. Participants work through a simulated tailings and process-plant risk case, test controls against field evidence, and make decisions under an escalating incident scenario. They leave with a practical Mine HSE and Tailings Assurance Action Plan: a documented risk register, critical-control verification schedule, compliance priorities, incident-learning actions and a 90-day implementation roadmap that can be adapted for their operation.
The course is designed for experienced mining professionals who influence site safety, environmental performance, operational risk or tailings governance. It gives both technical specialists and operational leaders a common method for challenging weak controls, escalating material risks and directing resources toward the controls that prevent fatal, environmental and tailings-related failures.

Requirements and prerequisites

The course assumes that attendees can read operating procedures and interpret simple risk matrices. No engineering degree, formal ISO auditor qualification, BowTieXP licence or prior tailings design experience is required; tailings governance concepts are taught from an operational assurance perspective rather than a geotechnical design perspective.
Training methodology
The programme uses short instructor-led modules followed by applied mine-site exercises. Participants analyse a realistic operation involving a processing plant, haulage activities, water management and a tailings storage facility; they build risk registers, BowTie diagrams, verification questions and escalation actions from the case evidence. Facilitated group work tests competing operational, environmental and safety priorities. Daily debriefs connect each method to participants’ own sites, and the final session converts learning into an individually tailored Mine HSE and Tailings Assurance Action Plan for management discussion after the course.

Day 1: Integrated mining HSE systems and material risk
- Mining HSE risk profile: fatal hazards, environmental receptors and tailings consequences
- ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 process architecture for mine-site management systems
- Context, interested parties and legal-compliance obligations in mining operations
- Hazard identification across drilling, blasting, loading, haulage and processing
- Environmental aspect-impact assessment for water, dust, waste, noise and biodiversity

Workshop: Participants map the HSE processes and material risks for a simulated open-pit mine and processing operation, producing a site-level risk and obligations profile.
Day 2: Critical controls, BowTies and field assurance

Day 3: Incident learning and environmental operational control
