Workplace incidents often occur during routine or non-routine tasks that appear familiar: isolating equipment, clearing a blockage, working at height, lifting loads, starting up a process, or coordinating contractors. Generic risk assessments rarely give supervisors and crews the task-level controls they need at the point of work. This course equips safety professionals and operational leaders to use Job Safety Analysis (JSA) as a disciplined method for breaking work into steps, identifying credible hazards, selecting effective controls, and communicating safe work requirements before exposure occurs.

Participants learn to plan and facilitate JSA workshops, observe work without relying on assumptions, define task boundaries, sequence job steps, and identify energy sources, hazardous conditions, human-factor contributors, and control failures. The programme applies the hierarchy of controls, ISO 45001 risk-management principles, risk matrices, permit-to-work interfaces, and verification checks. Participants also learn when a JSA should trigger escalation to a formal risk assessment, method statement, confined-space plan, lifting plan, or management-of-change review.

Delivery combines instructor-led technical sessions with case-based analysis of maintenance, construction, production, and contractor activities. Teams conduct structured task observations, challenge weak control statements, build JSA forms in Microsoft Excel, and rehearse pre-job briefings. Training methodology

The instructor uses short technical briefings to establish the JSA method, then moves participants into progressively more demanding task-analysis workshops. Participants work from photographs, work packs, permits, incident extracts, and task scenarios to identify hazards and challenge control quality. Small groups build and peer-review JSAs in Excel, practise worker consultation and pre-job briefings, and use an assurance checklist to test whether controls are workable in the field. Day 1: JSA foundations and task definition

Day 2: Task observation and hazard identification

Day 3: Risk evaluation and control design

Workshop: Participants convert a weak, PPE-led JSA into a control plan with hierarchy-based controls, residual-risk scores, and escalation requirements.

Day 4: JSA facilitation, communication, and assurance

  • Facilitating a crew-led JSA workshop without substituting assumptions for consultation
  • Using questioning techniques to surface local knowledge and control gaps
  • Writing clear control statements with accountable owners and due points
  • Creating verification criteria, field checks, and evidence requirements
  • Conducting pre-job briefings and documenting worker acknowledgement

Workshop: Participants facilitate a simulated pre-job briefing, receive peer feedback, and produce a control-verification checklist for supervisors.

Day 5: Applied JSA development and implementation

  • Integrating JSA outputs with work orders, contractor plans, and site procedures

  • Setting review frequencies and triggers for recurrent and changing tasks
  • Correcting common JSA defects including generic steps, copied hazards, and unverifiable controls
  • Creating implementation roles for supervisors, safety teams, planners, and contractors
  • Measuring JSA effectiveness through observations, deviations, and incident learning

Workshop: Each participant completes and presents a review-ready JSA package and a 90-day implementation plan for use in their workplace.
