Course overview

Safety teams often hold incident reports, inspections, observations, training records, corrective actions and exposure data in separate spreadsheets or systems. Monthly reports then rely on manual consolidation, inconsistent definitions and static charts that conceal trends by site, contractor, shift, injury type or control status. This course enables HSE professionals to build governed Microsoft Power BI dashboards that turn operational safety data into timely management information and defensible performance reporting.

Participants learn to connect and clean occupational health and safety data with Power Query, structure a safety data model, and create DAX measures for incident rates, lost-time injuries, severity rates, near-miss reporting, overdue actions and leading indicators. They build interactive dashboards using drill-through, tooltips, slicers, bookmarks, decomposition trees and map visuals, while applying practical rules for definitions, denominators, date logic and confidential employee data. The course also addresses publication, refresh, workspace access and report governance in the Power BI Service.

Instruction combines guided demonstrations with hands-on development using realistic HSE datasets covering incidents, inspections, hazard observations and corrective actions. By the final day, each participant produces a working safety dashboard pack: an executive performance page, an incident analysis page, an assurance and actions page, documented measures, and a publication plan for their organisation. The result is a reusable reporting design that can be adapted to existing EHS systems, Excel registers or exported operational data.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should be comfortable using Excel tables, filters, pivot tables and basic formulas, and should understand common occupational safety concepts such as incidents, near misses, inspections, corrective actions, lost-time injuries and hours worked. Prior experience preparing HSE reports or maintaining safety registers is strongly recommended. Familiarity with Microsoft Power BI Desktop is helpful but not essential; the course introduces the required interface, Power Query workflow and DAX foundations before applying them to safety metrics. Programming, SQL, advanced statistics and previous DAX coding are not required.

Training methodology

The instructor demonstrates each Power BI technique against realistic HSE reporting scenarios, then participants apply it in guided desktop exercises. You should be confident with Excel tables, filters and basic formulas, and understand the safety data your organisation collects. Previous Power BI or DAX experience is useful but not required, as the course starts with the Desktop workflow before moving into data modelling and measures.
