Course overview
Operations teams often manage a continuous flow of service requests, maintenance work, supplier issues, process improvements, incidents and routine operational tasks alongside urgent escalations. When work enters faster than it leaves, teams lose visibility of priorities, carry excessive work in progress, miss service commitments and rely on status meetings to discover bottlenecks. This course equips participants to use Kanban as an operational management method for making work visible, controlling flow and improving delivery without imposing an artificial project schedule on recurring work.
Participants learn to design Kanban systems that reflect real operational workflows, from request intake and triage through execution, review, handover and closure. They practise defining work item types, writing explicit workflow policies, setting practical work-in-progress limits, managing blocked work and using pull signals to prevent overload. The course also covers service delivery metrics including lead time, cycle time, throughput, work item age and cumulative flow diagrams, enabling participants to identify constraints and make evidence-based improvement decisions.
Instruction combines facilitator-led explanation with operations-focused simulations, workflow-design workshops and analysis of realistic board data. Participants configure and test a Kanban board using recognised digital tools, run replenishment and daily Kanban meetings, and respond to changing demand in a live case exercise. Each participant leaves with an operational Kanban implementation pack: a mapped workflow, board design, work item definitions, explicit policies, initial WIP limits, metrics dashboard specification and a 30-day adoption plan.
The course is suited to professionals responsible for coordinating operational work across teams, functions or service lines, and to managers who need more reliable delivery information than task lists and informal status updates can provide.

Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and is suitable for participants new to Kanban. Participants should have experience of a real operational workflow, such as service requests, order processing, facilities work, incident management, customer support or internal approvals, so they can apply the method to recognisable work. Basic familiarity with task lists, spreadsheets or digital work boards is helpful. Participants should be comfortable discussing demand, priorities, handoffs and team capacity. No prior Agile, Scrum, Lean certification, statistical training or Kanban software expertise is required. Complete beginners should expect practical terminology and guided board-design exercises from day one.
Training methodology
The course uses short instructor-led modules followed by hands-on application to an operations case involving fluctuating service demand, urgent work and cross-team dependencies. Participants map a current-state workflow, configure physical or digital Kanban boards, write policies, set WIP limits and analyse simulated delivery data. Small-group exercises include replenishment decisions, blocker escalation and service delivery reviews. Facilitators provide structured feedback on each board design. On day five, participants convert their work into an implementation pack and 30-day pilot plan for their own operational environment.

Day 3: Managing Demand, Capacity and Work in Progress
