Course overview

Leadership potential decisions influence succession depth, promotion quality, development investment, and retention of high-value employees. Yet many organisations still equate potential with current performance, manager visibility, tenure, or confidence in interviews. This creates avoidable risk: strong technical performers may be promoted into unsuitable leadership roles, quieter high-potential employees may be overlooked, and talent reviews can become inconsistent across functions. This course equips HR and talent professionals to apply the Korn Ferry Leadership Potential framework with disciplined evidence, clear decision criteria, and practical development actions.

Participants examine the dimensions used to evaluate leadership potential, including learning agility, drivers, traits, experiences, and leadership competencies. They learn to distinguish performance, readiness, aspiration, and potential; interpret assessment evidence; structure manager interviews; identify potential indicators and derailment risks; and calibrate ratings in talent-review discussions. The course also covers ethical assessment practice, confidentiality, adverse-impact considerations, and the limits of assessment data. Participants practise translating assessment findings into succession slates, individual development plans, and targeted stretch-assignment recommendations.

Delivery combines instructor-led framework teaching with scored case materials, talent-review simulations, structured interview practice, and group calibration workshops. Participants work with a realistic leadership population, compare evidence across multiple data sources, challenge rating bias, and document defensible conclusions. Each participant leaves with a completed leadership-potential assessment case file, a calibration guide, an individual development plan template, and a 90-day implementation plan for applying the method within their own talent-management process.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate leadership potential, current performance, readiness, aspiration, and promotability using defined talent criteria
  • Apply the Korn Ferry Leadership Potential framework to evaluate drivers, traits, experiences, learning agility, and competencies
  • Interpret multi-source leadership assessment evidence and identify converging and conflicting data points
  • Conduct structured potential interviews using behavioural probes and evidence-rating notes
  • Recognise potential indicators, derailment risks, and common manager-rating biases in talent decisions
  • Facilitate a calibration discussion using evidence matrices, challenge questions, and documented rating rationales
  • Translate assessment findings into succession recommendations, stretch assignments, and individual development plans
  • Create an assessment governance plan covering confidentiality, data handling, feedback boundaries, and review cadence

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Build a defensible method for separating high performance from genuine leadership potential
  • Gain practical confidence leading evidence-based talent calibration conversations with senior stakeholders

Who should attend

  • Talent Management Managers — who design succession and high-potential identification processes
  • HR Business Partners — who advise leaders on promotion, talent reviews, and development decisions
  • Learning and Development Managers — who convert potential findings into targeted leadership development
  • Succession Planning Specialists — who build credible pipelines for critical leadership roles
  • People Analytics Professionals — who analyse talent data and support calibration evidence
  • Line Managers with talent-review responsibility — who must assess and develop emerging leaders fairly

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should understand the basic HR concepts of performance appraisal, competency frameworks, succession planning, and individual development plans. Experience participating in a talent-review meeting, conducting manager interviews, or supporting leadership development is helpful but not essential. Participants should be comfortable reading short assessment reports and discussing people data confidentially. A complete beginner in talent management can attend, but should expect to spend time learning the distinction between performance, potential, readiness, and aspiration. No psychology qualification, psychometric accreditation, statistical software, or prior Korn Ferry product certification is required.

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor-led sessions to introduce each part of the Korn Ferry Leadership Potential framework, followed by hands-on application to a continuing leadership-talent case. Participants review assessment extracts, code behavioural interview evidence, compare potential profiles, and conduct simulated calibration meetings. Small groups challenge ratings against agreed criteria and document their decisions in evidence matrices. Facilitated feedback focuses on the quality of evidence, not personal opinion. On the final day, participants build an implementation plan that adapts the method to their organisation’s talent-review cycle, decision rights, and development processes.

Course outline

Frequently asked questions

No prior Korn Ferry certification or psychology qualification is required. The course teaches participants how to use the framework and interpret case-based evidence responsibly; it does not qualify participants to administer restricted assessments where publisher accreditation is required.

Bring a laptop for reviewing case materials, completing evidence matrices, and building your implementation plan. Training materials provide sample assessment extracts and templates, so access to your organisation’s live talent data is not needed.

Yes, particularly for leaders who nominate employees, participate in talent reviews, or sponsor successor development. HR and talent professionals will gain deeper process-design and governance capability, while line managers will focus on evidence quality and fair ratings.

Performance-management courses focus on results in the current role, while succession courses often focus on pipeline process and replacement planning. This course concentrates on the assessment method used to judge future leadership capacity and translate that judgement into development and succession actions.

You can use the evidence matrix, interview guide, calibration questions, and development-plan template in talent reviews, promotion discussions, and succession planning. The final implementation plan helps you specify where the method fits into your organisation’s existing annual talent cycle.

You leave with a completed leadership-potential case file, documented calibration rationale, an individual development plan, and a 90-day application plan. These deliverables can be adapted for your organisation’s competency model, leadership levels, and governance requirements.
