Course overview

Distribution managers are held accountable for delivery performance long after inventory leaves the warehouse. They must control the costly final leg across route capacity, carrier commitments, driver productivity, failed deliveries, customer time windows, proof-of-delivery exceptions and escalating service expectations. This course addresses the operational decisions behind on-time, in-full last-mile performance: where to place capacity, when to use owned versus contracted fleets, how to set service promises, and how to intervene before exceptions become customer complaints or margin erosion.

Participants learn to design and manage a last-mile operating model using delivery segmentation, territory design, route-planning parameters, dispatch controls, carrier scorecards and exception-management workflows. They calculate route and stop economics, distinguish productive from non-productive driver time, establish delivery KPIs, and use root-cause analysis to reduce failed-first-attempt deliveries. The programme also covers customer communication rules, reverse-logistics handoffs, delivery partner governance, peak-period planning and practical use of transport-management-system data.

Teaching combines instructor-led operational frameworks with dispatch scenarios, route-planning exercises, KPI clinics and a multi-day distribution case. Participants work with delivery data to diagnose performance gaps and make capacity, routing and service-policy decisions. Participants work in groups on a distribution case involving missed time windows, carrier underperformance and peak-demand capacity constraints. Hands-on workshops cover route-planning assumptions, scorecard construction, escalation design and dashboard interpretation. Daily debriefs connect the exercise decisions to participants' own depots or territories, and the final session is used to convert findings into a prioritised 90-day last-mile improvement plan.
