Course overview
Managers are often held accountable for results they cannot deliver alone, yet delegation breaks down when work is assigned without decision rights, success criteria, checkpoints, or consequences. The result is avoidable escalation, missed deadlines, uneven workloads, and capable employees waiting for approval. This course addresses the practical leadership challenge of transferring responsibility without losing control: deciding what to delegate, to whom, at what level of authority, and how to maintain visible accountability without micromanaging.
Participants learn to use delegation diagnostics, task-risk assessment, and the Delegation Ladder to match authority to capability and consequence. They build clear delegation briefs covering outcomes, boundaries, resources, decision rights, milestones, and escalation routes. The course also develops skills in RACI role clarification, SMART performance agreements, accountability conversations, coaching check-ins, and corrective action when commitments are missed. Participants practise distinguishing delegation from task dumping, abdication, and overly directive supervision.
Delivery combines instructor-led models with realistic leadership cases, role-played delegation meetings, peer critique, and structured planning workshops. Participants work with reusable templates in Microsoft Excel and collaboration examples from Microsoft Teams, Asana, and Trello. They leave with a Delegation and Accountability Action Pack: a delegation inventory, RACI matrix, completed delegation brief, accountability cadence, escalation map, and a 30-day implementation plan for their own team.
The course is designed for supervisors, team leaders, project leaders, and new-to-mid-level managers who already lead people or coordinate work across functions. It is particularly valuable where managers need more reliable execution while developing employee ownership, judgement, and readiness for broader responsibility.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Diagnose delegation barriers using a workload, capability, and task-risk assessment
- Select appropriate authority levels with the Delegation Ladder
- Write delegation briefs that define outcomes, boundaries, decision rights, resources, and deadlines
- Build RACI matrices to clarify accountable, responsible, consulted, and informed roles
- Set SMART performance agreements with measurable evidence of completion
- Conduct accountability check-ins using milestone reviews, coaching questions, and escalation triggers
- Address missed commitments through a structured corrective accountability conversation
- Produce a 30-day Delegation and Accountability Action Pack for a live team challenge
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for assigning work with authority boundaries rather than vague verbal requests
- Build evidence of stronger people-management practice through completed delegation and accountability documents
- Handle underperformance and missed commitments with clearer, fact-based leadership conversations
- Create more time for planning, stakeholder management, and higher-value leadership work
- Demonstrate readiness for broader management responsibility by developing others to make sound decisions
For your organisation
- Reduce delivery delays caused by unclear ownership, duplicated effort, and unnecessary approval bottlenecks
- Improve auditability of critical work through documented roles, decision rights, milestones, and escalation routes
- Increase manager capacity by moving suitable decisions and responsibilities closer to the work
- Develop employee capability and succession readiness through deliberate stretch delegation
- Create more consistent performance follow-up across teams using shared accountability routines and templates
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Line Managers — who need to distribute operational work while retaining clear ownership of results
- Team Leaders — who must develop employee autonomy without allowing priorities or standards to drift
- Project Managers — who coordinate cross-functional contributors with shared dependencies and unclear authority
- Newly Appointed Managers — who are moving from personal delivery to accountability through others
- Operations Supervisors — who need consistent handovers, shift accountability, and escalation routines
- Functional Heads — who need managers below them to make decisions at the right level
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience leading a small team, supervising work, coordinating a project, or assigning tasks to colleagues. They should be familiar with basic workplace concepts such as objectives, deadlines, performance expectations, one-to-one meetings, and organisational reporting lines. Bring one current work area where delivery depends on other people, such as a project, recurring process, service team, or operational target; it will be used in the course workshops. No formal leadership qualification, project management certification, HR training, or prior use of RACI, Asana, Trello, or Microsoft Teams is required.
Training methodology
The five-day programme alternates concise instructor-led teaching with applied leadership practice. Participants analyse failed delegation scenarios, assess real tasks by risk and capability, and convert ambiguous requests into written delegation briefs. Small groups build RACI matrices for cross-functional cases, then test accountability conversations through role-play involving late delivery, quality concerns, and boundary breaches. The instructor provides feedback against observable criteria. Each day adds to an individual Delegation and Accountability Action Pack, culminating in peer review and a practical 30-day implementation plan.
