Course overview

Strategy execution often fails not because the strategic direction is wrong, but because the organisation’s structure, decision rights, capabilities, incentives and everyday behaviours remain aligned to an earlier operating model. Leaders and strategy professionals need a disciplined way to identify these misalignments before they become missed milestones, competing priorities, slow decisions or stalled transformation programmes. The McKinsey 7S Framework provides a practical diagnostic for connecting strategic intent to the organisational conditions required to deliver it.

This course teaches participants to use the seven interdependent elements—Strategy, Structure, Systems, Shared Values, Style, Staff and Skills—to assess execution readiness and design targeted interventions. Participants learn to define a strategic change case, gather evidence through document review and stakeholder interviews, score current and target-state alignment, identify root causes across the hard and soft S elements, and prioritise initiatives using impact, feasibility and dependency criteria. The course also covers governance design, communication planning, capability development and measures that track whether the new operating model is taking hold.

Delivered through instructor-led teaching, facilitated case analysis and workshop-based application, the course moves from framework understanding to a defensible execution plan. Participants work with a realistic transformation scenario and then apply the method to their own organisational priority. They leave with a completed 7S alignment diagnostic, a target-state map, a prioritised execution roadmap, named owners, milestones, risks and measures suitable for review with sponsors or senior management.

The programme is designed for managers and professionals responsible for translating strategy into coordinated organisational action, particularly where a new strategy, restructuring, digital programme, merger integration or performance turnaround requires change across several functions.

Course objectives

Who should attend

  • Strategy Managers — who must convert strategic plans into coordinated execution programmes
  • Business Unit Leaders — who need to align teams, operating practices and resources behind new priorities
  • Transformation Managers — who diagnose organisational barriers during change and improvement initiatives
  • Programme Managers — who coordinate cross-functional workstreams, dependencies and delivery governance
  • Organisational Development Managers — who align capability, culture and leadership practices with strategy
  • PMO Leaders — who need a structured method for monitoring execution readiness and intervention progress

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have experience contributing to a strategic plan, business case, transformation programme or departmental operating plan. They should be comfortable discussing organisational structures, processes, performance measures, stakeholders and change impacts. Familiarity with basic strategic planning concepts—objectives, initiatives, KPIs, governance and risk—is assumed, along with the ability to work with spreadsheets and presentation slides. Participants are encouraged to bring a current strategic initiative or execution challenge for application during the course. Prior use of the McKinsey 7S Framework, formal consulting experience, advanced data analysis or organisational design certification is not required.

Training methodology

The course combines focused instructor-led modules with progressive workshop activities using a transformation case and participants’ own strategic contexts. Participants analyse strategy statements, organisation charts, process measures and stakeholder evidence to populate a 7S diagnostic. Small groups compare alternative interventions, test dependencies and build governance arrangements for a simulated executive review. Facilitated peer critique is used to strengthen the logic behind each recommendation. On the final day, each participant develops and presents an execution plan, receiving structured feedback on evidence, sequencing, ownership and measures.

Course outline

Day 1: Diagnosing strategy-to-execution alignment

  • Strategy execution failure patterns and organisational misalignment
  • Origins, purpose and limits of the McKinsey 7S Framework
  • Hard and soft S elements and their interdependencies
  • Translating strategic intent into testable execution requirements
  • Defining the scope and unit of analysis for a 7S review
  • Evidence sources for organisational alignment assessment
  • Current-state versus target-state diagnostic logic

Workshop: Participants scope a strategic execution case and create an initial 7S evidence plan identifying documents, stakeholders and diagnostic questions.

Day 2: Assessing the hard S elements

  • Strategy clarity, strategic choices and execution assumptions
  • Structure analysis using accountability and reporting relationships
  • Systems mapping for planning, budgeting, performance and decision processes
  • Decision-rights analysis using RACI and governance matrices
  • Identifying process bottlenecks and hand-off failures
  • Measuring hard-element alignment with diagnostic rating scales
  • Connecting structural and system gaps to delivery risks

Workshop: Participants analyse a case organisation’s strategy, structure and systems, then produce a hard-S gap assessment with supporting evidence.

Day 3: Assessing the people and culture elements

  • Shared Values as behavioural anchors for strategic choices
  • Leadership Style and its effect on decision speed and accountability
  • Staff analysis covering capacity, critical roles and workforce deployment
  • Skills analysis for strategic capabilities and capability gaps
  • Stakeholder interview design and behavioural evidence collection
  • Culture indicators, informal norms and resistance patterns
  • Assessing soft-S alignment without relying on perception alone

Workshop: Participants conduct a structured stakeholder-interview simulation and create a soft-S evidence summary with priority findings.

Day 4: Designing integrated execution interventions

  • Cross-element root-cause analysis and causal chain mapping
  • Target-state 7S design principles for operating-model change
  • Intervention options across process, governance, capability and culture
  • Impact-feasibility-urgency prioritisation matrices
  • Dependency mapping and critical-path sequencing
  • Execution risk registers and mitigation ownership
  • Change communication and stakeholder mobilisation plans

Workshop: Participants convert diagnostic findings into a prioritised intervention portfolio and dependency-based implementation sequence.

Day 5: Building the execution roadmap and executive case

  • Roadmap architecture: workstreams, milestones and stage gates
  • Governance forums, sponsor roles and escalation mechanisms
  • Outcome measures, leading indicators and 7S review metrics
  • Resource and capability planning for execution workstreams
  • Executive narrative design for a 7S recommendation
  • Using Microsoft Planner and Excel to track actions and dependencies
  • Establishing post-implementation review and adjustment cycles

Workshop: Participants present a completed 7S diagnostic and 90-day execution roadmap, receiving facilitator and peer feedback on its executive readiness.

Frequently asked questions

No. The framework is introduced from first principles, including how each of the seven elements is defined and assessed. You should, however, understand basic strategic planning and have some exposure to organisational processes or change initiatives.

A laptop is recommended for completing the diagnostic, roadmap and presentation templates used during the workshops. Bringing a current strategy, transformation initiative or execution problem will make the final application plan more immediately useful, although a detailed case study is provided.

It is best suited to strategy, transformation, PMO, organisational development and business unit professionals who influence cross-functional execution. It is particularly relevant when an organisation is launching a new strategy, redesigning an operating model or recovering a delayed change programme.

General strategic planning courses focus on setting direction, analysing markets and selecting strategic priorities. This course concentrates on the organisational alignment required after priorities have been set: structure, systems, leadership behaviour, skills, staffing and shared values.

You can use the 7S diagnostic to structure sponsor interviews, assess readiness before a major initiative, identify root causes behind delivery problems and facilitate alignment workshops. The roadmap and governance templates can be adapted for business-unit plans, transformation programmes and post-merger integration work.

You will leave with a completed current-state and target-state 7S map, evidence questions, a prioritised intervention portfolio, a dependency map and a 90-day execution roadmap. These outputs are designed to be refined and used in a management or sponsor review.
