Course overview
Strategic plans often fail to translate into routine management action because objectives, initiatives, financial measures and operational indicators are reported in separate files. Leaders receive static packs too late to challenge assumptions, compare performance against targets or identify delivery risks. This course enables professionals to build Microsoft Power BI strategy dashboards that connect enterprise priorities to measurable outcomes, making progress, variance, ownership and intervention needs visible in one governed reporting experience.
Participants learn to turn a strategic plan, balanced scorecard or OKR framework into a dashboard design and data model. They work with Power BI Desktop, Power Query and DAX to prepare planning and performance data; define strategic KPIs; create target-versus-actual, trend, decomposition and initiative views; and use drill-through, tooltips and conditional formatting to support management decisions. The course also covers semantic model design, row-level security, publishing, refresh planning and workspace governance for dashboards used across leadership teams.
Delivery combines instructor demonstrations with structured build exercises using a realistic corporate strategy case. Each participant develops a strategy dashboard prototype from a KPI dictionary, creates executive and operational report pages, and documents measures, data sources, refresh responsibilities and access rules. They leave with a reusable dashboard design pack and an implementation action plan, alongside a certificate on completion.
The course is suited to analysts, planning professionals, PMO staff and managers who already use Power BI and need to produce decision-ready reporting for strategic planning, transformation portfolios or business performance reviews.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Translate strategic objectives, OKRs or balanced scorecard measures into a Power BI dashboard requirements matrix
- Design a star-schema semantic model for targets, actuals, initiatives, owners and reporting periods
- Transform planning and performance data with Power Query using repeatable cleansing and refresh steps
- Write DAX measures for target variance, year-to-date performance, status thresholds and rolling trends
- Build executive dashboard pages using KPI cards, scorecards, decomposition trees, drill-through and report tooltips
- Create a KPI dictionary that defines calculation logic, thresholds, ownership, source systems and refresh frequency
- Configure Power BI Service workspaces, scheduled refresh and row-level security for governed dashboard distribution
- Produce a strategy dashboard prototype and implementation plan for a live organisational reporting need
Benefits of attending
For you
- Build a portfolio-quality strategy dashboard prototype rather than another generic operational report
- Gain practical DAX patterns for target variance, trend, status and management-level performance measures
- Learn to lead dashboard requirements conversations with strategy, finance, PMO and executive stakeholders
- Strengthen credibility as a Power BI practitioner who can connect data models to strategic decision processes
- Leave with a KPI dictionary and dashboard governance template adaptable to future planning and review cycles
For your organisation
- Creates a consistent visual link between strategic objectives, KPIs, initiatives, owners and delivery status
- Reduces manual preparation of executive performance packs through reusable Power Query and DAX logic
- Improves management intervention by exposing target variance, deteriorating trends and stalled initiatives earlier
- Establishes clearer KPI definitions, data ownership and refresh responsibilities across planning functions
- Supports controlled distribution of sensitive performance data through workspace design and row-level security
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Strategy Managers — who need to convert strategic objectives and delivery priorities into leadership reporting
- Business Intelligence Analysts — who build Power BI reports and need stronger methods for executive performance dashboards
- PMO Managers — who track transformation portfolios, milestones, benefits and delivery risks across initiatives
- Performance and Planning Analysts — who consolidate target, actual and forecast data for management review cycles
- Finance Business Partners — who need to connect financial outcomes with strategic drivers and accountable initiatives
- Operational Excellence Managers — who need visible KPI ownership, escalation signals and cross-functional performance views
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable navigating Power BI Desktop, importing data, creating basic visuals and publishing or viewing reports in the Power BI Service. Prior experience with Excel tables, KPI reporting, targets versus actuals and organisational planning cycles is expected. Participants should understand the difference between a measure and a column, although advanced DAX is not required; the course develops it through guided examples. No programming, database administration, data science or prior balanced scorecard certification is required. Bring a Windows laptop with Power BI Desktop installed and access to a Microsoft 365 work account where possible.
Training methodology
The instructor uses a single strategic transformation case throughout the week, moving from a strategy map and KPI dictionary to a published Power BI dashboard. Short demonstrations introduce each Power BI technique, followed by individual build labs in Power Query, data modelling, DAX and report design. Participants critique executive pages against real decision questions, work in groups to resolve KPI-definition and governance issues, and complete an end-of-course application workshop. The final session converts their prototype into a practical data, stakeholder and deployment plan.
Course outline
Day 1: From strategic plan to dashboard blueprint
- Strategic planning reporting failures and executive decision questions
- Balanced scorecard, OKR and strategy-map measurement structures
- KPI hierarchy design: objectives, outcomes, drivers and initiatives
- KPI dictionary fields for definitions, formulas, thresholds and ownership
- Dashboard user stories for executives, strategy teams and initiative owners
- Power BI Desktop interface and report architecture for management reporting
- Wireframing executive, performance and initiative-detail report pages
Workshop: Participants convert a strategic transformation case into a dashboard requirements matrix, KPI dictionary and three-page report wireframe.
Day 2: Preparing planning and performance data
- Source-data assessment for plans, actuals, targets, forecasts and initiative registers
- Power Query connections to Excel workbooks, CSV files and SharePoint folders
- Data profiling, data types and quality checks in Power Query
- Unpivoting monthly targets and actuals for analytical reporting
- Merging initiative, owner, organisational-unit and KPI reference tables
- Date-table requirements for monthly, quarterly and year-to-date strategy reporting
- Query parameters and refresh-ready transformation design
Workshop: Participants build a refresh-ready Power Query pipeline that combines target, actual and initiative data into reporting tables.
Day 3: Modelling and calculating strategic performance
- Star-schema design for strategic performance dashboards
- Fact and dimension tables for KPI results, targets, initiatives and organisational units
- Relationships, filter direction and role-playing date considerations
