Course overview

Inclusive team leadership requires more than good intentions: managers need evidence of how meeting load, focus time, after-hours work, collaboration patterns and network access affect different groups. Microsoft Viva Insights provides aggregated signals that can help leaders identify conditions linked to burnout, unequal participation and fragmented collaboration without monitoring individuals. This course prepares leaders to use those signals responsibly, translate them into team practices and avoid drawing conclusions that the data cannot support.

Participants learn how Viva Insights personal, manager and organisational experiences work; how metrics are calculated and protected; and how to interpret dashboards, meeting effectiveness measures, focus-plan indicators and collaboration patterns. They practise framing inclusive leadership questions, segmenting findings appropriately, using Power BI to communicate aggregate evidence and designing interventions such as meeting norms, focus-time protections, onboarding connections and workload reviews. Particular attention is given to privacy, data minimisation, ethical interpretation and the distinction between behavioural signals and employee performance management.

Teaching combines instructor-led demonstrations, worked leadership cases, dashboard interpretation labs and facilitated peer critique. Participants use realistic Microsoft 365 collaboration scenarios to build an Inclusive Team Insights Action Plan: a documented leadership question, metric set, privacy safeguards, stakeholder communications, intervention backlog and 90-day measurement plan. This gives both the participant and their sponsor a usable framework for introducing evidence-led inclusion improvements within an existing team or business unit.

The course is designed for experienced people managers, HR and people analytics professionals, collaboration platform owners and transformation leaders who have access to, or influence over, Microsoft 365 and Viva Insights adoption. It is especially valuable where organisations want to improve sustainable work practices while preserving employee trust.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret Viva Insights manager and organisational metrics to identify meeting, focus-time and collaboration risks affecting team inclusion

  • Analyse collaboration patterns to identify potential access, onboarding and cross-team connection gaps
  • Design inclusive meeting and focus-time interventions linked to measurable Viva Insights indicators
  • Build a Power BI leadership briefing that communicates aggregate findings, limitations and recommended actions
  • Produce a 90-day Inclusive Team Insights Action Plan with owners, safeguards, success measures and review points

Who should attend

  • People Managers and Senior Managers — who need evidence to improve team norms, workload patterns and equitable participation
  • HR Business Partners — who advise leaders on inclusion, wellbeing and sustainable performance practices
  • People Analytics Specialists — who translate workplace data into ethically governed leadership recommendations
  • Microsoft 365 and Viva Platform Owners — who configure adoption, access and responsible-use guidance for Viva Insights
  • Learning and Organisational Development Leaders — who design manager capability programmes grounded in work-pattern evidence
  • Transformation and Employee Experience Leads — who need to connect digital workplace signals to practical culture change

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have experience leading, advising or supporting teams in a Microsoft 365 environment and be comfortable discussing meeting practices, workload, employee wellbeing and inclusion. Familiarity with Microsoft Teams, Outlook calendars and basic dashboard concepts is assumed. Participants should understand that workplace analytics uses aggregated behavioural signals rather than individual performance ratings. Access to a Viva Insights-enabled Microsoft 365 tenant is useful for post-course application, but it is not required during training because guided examples and datasets are provided. Advanced statistics, Power BI development and administrator-level Viva configuration are not required.

Training methodology

The five-day programme uses short instructor-led briefings followed by Viva Insights dashboard walkthroughs, metric interpretation labs and leadership case discussions. Participants work with realistic Microsoft 365 collaboration data to distinguish useful aggregate signals from misleading conclusions. Small groups critique intervention proposals for privacy, feasibility and inclusion impact, then refine them using structured decision templates. Each day adds a component to an Inclusive Team Insights Action Plan, culminating in a peer-reviewed 90-day implementation and measurement plan for a participant’s own leadership context.

Course outline

Day 1: Viva Insights and evidence-led inclusive leadership

  • Microsoft Viva Insights experiences: personal, manager, leader and analyst perspectives
  • Workplace analytics signals versus employee performance measurement
  • Inclusive leadership questions for meetings, workload, connection and access
  • Microsoft 365 data sources behind collaboration and calendar metrics
  • Aggregation, minimum group sizes and privacy-preserving reporting
  • Metric interpretation: baselines, trends, benchmarks and contextual factors
  • Leadership decision canvas for evidence-led team improvement

Workshop: Participants convert a live inclusion or sustainable-work concern into a scoped leadership question, stakeholder map and candidate metric set.

Day 2: Reading work-pattern signals responsibly

  • Meeting hours, recurring meetings and meeting effectiveness indicators

  • Interpreting manager insights dashboards without overclaiming causality
  • Segment comparison methods and small-group disclosure risks
  • Data quality checks for calendar behaviour, hybrid work and role differences

Day 3: Designing inclusive team interventions

  • Inclusive meeting norms for agenda ownership, participation and decision clarity
  • Focus-time protection and workload boundary interventions
  • Reducing collaboration overload through channel and meeting design
