Course overview
Healthcare quality teams often receive data from incident systems, electronic patient records, audits, patient experience surveys and operational spreadsheets, yet struggle to turn it into a consistent reporting view. Manual monthly packs can obscure deterioration in falls, pressure ulcers, infection rates, waiting times, readmissions or compliance with care standards. This course helps participants build Power BI reports that show quality performance clearly, retain essential clinical and operational context, and support timely action without misrepresenting small numbers, incomplete data or changing definitions.
Participants learn to connect, clean and model healthcare quality data in Power BI Desktop; define measures using DAX; and create dashboards for quality indicators, trends, targets, benchmarks and exceptions. The course covers star-schema design, date tables, data-quality checks, rate and denominator calculations, filtering, drill-through and row-level security concepts. Participants work with realistic quality-reporting scenarios including incidents, safety audits, patient outcomes and service performance, learning how to distinguish counts from rates and how to document indicator logic for scrutiny.
Instruction combines guided demonstrations with structured hands-on build sessions. Participants create a healthcare quality dashboard from source files, develop a measure catalogue, apply appropriate visual and accessibility choices, and publish a governed report to the Power BI Service. They leave with a reusable report template, DAX measures, a documented KPI specification and an action plan for applying the approach to their own reporting cycle.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable using Excel or similar spreadsheet software to inspect tables, filter data and understand basic formulas. Familiarity with common healthcare quality concepts such as indicators, targets, numerators, denominators, incidents, audits and reporting periods is helpful, but detailed clinical knowledge is not required. No previous Power BI, DAX, SQL, data-modelling or programming experience is required. Complete beginners should expect a structured introduction to the Power BI interface and should be prepared to work with data fields, relationships and calculated measures throughout the week.
Training methodology
The instructor uses a realistic healthcare quality reporting scenario throughout the week, moving from raw incident, audit and activity extracts to a published dashboard. Short demonstrations introduce each Power BI feature, followed by individual build exercises using prepared datasets and KPI specifications. Group discussions test how measures should be interpreted when volumes are small, denominators change or data is incomplete. Participants review dashboard designs against clinical governance questions, then complete an end-of-course application plan identifying their own priority report, source data, stakeholders and controls.

Day 1: Healthcare quality reporting foundations
- Healthcare quality domains: safety, effectiveness, experience and timeliness
- Indicator definitions: numerators, denominators, exclusions and reporting frequency
- Counts, rates, percentages and standardised measures
- Power BI Desktop interface, report view, data view and model view
- Importing Excel, CSV and folder-based quality-reporting extracts
- Power Query profiling for nulls, errors, duplicates and category inconsistencies
- Healthcare data confidentiality, aggregation and small-number disclosure considerations
Workshop: Participants profile a set of incident and audit extracts in Power Query and produce a documented data-quality issue log.
Day 2: Preparing and modelling quality data
- Power Query data types, replace values and conditional columns
- Unpivoting monthly quality spreadsheets into analysis-ready tables
- Appending service extracts and merging reference tables
- Star-schema design for quality fact tables and service dimensions
- Creating a dedicated calendar table for monthly and quarterly reporting
- Managing relationships, filter direction and ambiguous model paths
- Building a data dictionary and measure catalogue for governance review
Workshop: Participants transform source files into a star-schema model and produce a one-page data dictionary for the model.
Day 3: DAX measures for healthcare indicators
- DAX measures versus calculated columns in reporting models
- Basic aggregation measures for incidents, audits and activity
- DIVIDE function patterns for safe rate and percentage calculations
- Numerator and denominator measures for quality indicators
- Time intelligence for month-to-date, year-to-date and rolling trends
- Target, variance and red-amber-green status calculations
- Context transition, filter context and validation of DAX results
Workshop: Participants build and validate a KPI measure pack for falls, pressure ulcer prevalence, audit compliance and target variance.
Day 4: Dashboard design for action and assurance
