Course overview
Humanitarian teams need maps that answer operational questions quickly: which communities are beyond a two-hour travel threshold, where service coverage overlaps or leaves gaps, which routes remain viable after flooding, and how many people can reach a functioning health facility, water point, or distribution site. This course equips practitioners to turn fragmented assessment, population, road, facility, and administrative data into defensible access and service-planning maps for response coordination, programme targeting, and field deployment decisions.
Participants use QGIS to prepare humanitarian datasets, apply consistent geographic reference systems, join indicator tables to boundaries, assess travel constraints, and analyse proximity and coverage. They build maps for service availability, population exposure, access constraints, and priority locations using vector geoprocessing, raster terrain and hazard layers, spatial joins, buffers, network-informed travel assumptions, and map layouts designed for operational briefings. Attention is given to data provenance, Common Operational Datasets, protection-aware mapping, and communicating uncertainty rather than overstating precision.
The five-day programme combines instructor demonstrations with guided QGIS labs based on a realistic humanitarian response scenario. Participants work through a response-planning workflow from raw data intake to an operational map pack, then receive structured feedback on their analysis choices, symbology, and decision narrative. Each participant leaves with a completed QGIS project, documented data-processing workflow, service-access analysis, printable map layouts, and an action plan for applying the methods to their own programme area.
The course is suited to GIS officers, information management staff, programme teams, assessment specialists, and coordination personnel who already work with geographic or tabular response data and need stronger QGIS capability for humanitarian planning.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable working with spreadsheets and structured data, including columns, unique identifiers, basic filtering, and CSV files. Prior exposure to maps, administrative boundaries, GPS coordinates, or humanitarian datasets is useful. The course assumes participants can install and open desktop software and manage files on a laptop. Basic QGIS familiarity, such as adding a layer and navigating a map canvas, is recommended because the course moves quickly into analysis and map production. Programming, advanced statistics, remote-sensing expertise, and prior network-analysis experience are not required.
Training methodology
Instructor-led sessions introduce each QGIS workflow through short demonstrations, followed by guided individual labs using a simulated humanitarian response dataset. Participants clean Common Operational Dataset layers, import KoboToolbox exports, analyse service reach, and create maps for an operational planning meeting. Small-group reviews test assumptions about travel time, sensitive data, and priority criteria. Daily exercises build toward an individual access and service-planning map pack, and the final session includes peer critique and a practical implementation plan for participants’ own operational context.

Day 1: Humanitarian geospatial foundations in QGIS
- Humanitarian information-management workflow and decision questions

- Importing CSV, GeoPackage, shapefile, and web-based spatial data

Day 2: Assessment data and service availability mapping

- Attribute joins using administrative codes and facility identifiers

Day 3: Access and service-coverage analysis

Day 4: Prioritisation and protection-aware operational mapping

Day 5: Operational map packs and reproducible delivery
