Course overview

Business teams need answers from governed data without waiting days for a central reporting queue, yet uncontrolled self-service analytics can create conflicting KPIs, duplicated apps and misleading decisions. This course addresses that operational gap by teaching participants how to build Qlik Sense applications that are both easy for business users to explore and robust enough for organisational reporting. The course covers the Qlik Sense workflow from loading and shaping data through to publishing governed analytical apps. Participants work with the Data Manager, Data Load Editor and Qlik load script; create associations, synthetic-key-free data models and master calendars; build dimensions and master measures; and use set analysis, variables and alternate states for more precise calculations. They also design visualisations, filters, drill-down paths, bookmarks and stories that help users investigate exceptions rather than merely consume static reports. Governance topics include spaces, security rules, section access, reload schedules, app lifecycle management and performance tuning.

Delivery combines instructor demonstration with guided build exercises using realistic operational datasets. Each participant develops a self-service reporting application, including a documented data model, KPI definitions, governed master items, interactive dashboard sheets and a publication plan for business users. The final workshop requires participants to present their app, explain how its measures are controlled and show how a manager can move from a headline KPI to underlying records.

The course is designed for analysts, BI developers and data professionals who already work with reporting data and need to deliver trusted Qlik Sense analytics at scale. Managers gain staff who can reduce report rework while maintaining clear ownership of definitions, access and data refreshes.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical experience creating reports or analysing business data and be comfortable with tables, joins, filters, aggregations and common KPI calculations. Familiarity with Qlik Sense navigation, Excel, SQL SELECT statements or another BI tool is helpful, but prior Qlik development is not essential. The course assumes confidence using a Windows or web-based business application and interpreting data fields such as dates, product codes and transaction values. Participants do not need programming experience, database administration expertise, advanced statistics or prior knowledge of Qlik scripting; these are introduced through guided exercises.

Training methodology

The five days alternate short instructor-led design sessions with hands-on Qlik Sense builds. Participants load and model a realistic multi-source business dataset, then progressively create measures, visualisations, security controls and publication workflows. Exercises include diagnosing flawed data models, reconciling KPI calculations, redesigning a cluttered dashboard and responding to stakeholder reporting requests. Small-group reviews use agreed usability and governance criteria. On the final day, each participant completes an application plan covering audience, data refresh, access, ownership and success measures for an app they can develop in their workplace.

Day 2: Data loading and transformation with Qlik script

• Data cleansing with string, date and conditional functions
• Joining, concatenating and mapping tables
• Incremental load patterns and QVD file strategy

Workshop: Participants write a scripted reload that standardises source fields, creates a calendar and stores a reusable QVD layer.

Day 3: Measures, set analysis and analytical design
