Course overview
SAP S/4HANA Finance projects succeed or fail on the quality of configuration decisions behind daily postings, closing activities, tax treatment, payment runs and financial reporting. Finance professionals and IT teams need more than screen familiarity: they must understand how organisational structures, master data, ledgers and integration points translate accounting policy into controlled system behaviour. This five-day course prepares participants to configure and test core SAP S/4HANA Finance processes with a clear view of downstream operational and reporting consequences.
Participants work through the configuration of company codes, fiscal year variants, posting periods, global chart of accounts, general ledger accounts, document types, tax procedures, business partner financial roles, accounts payable, accounts receivable, asset accounting, bank accounting and controlling integration. They learn to use SAP Fiori configuration apps and SAP GUI transactions where appropriate, trace settings through the SAP Implementation Guide (IMG), define validation and substitution rules, and test postings from source transaction through Universal Journal reporting. The course also addresses parallel ledgers, document splitting, foreign currency valuation, dunning, automatic payment processing and period-end controls.
Delivery combines instructor demonstrations with guided configuration labs in an SAP S/4HANA training environment. Each day uses a connected business case based on a growing company that must establish legal entities, process supplier and customer transactions, capitalise assets and complete a controlled period close. Participants leave with a structured Finance configuration workbook, including selected configuration decisions, test scripts, posting evidence, issue logs and a practical configuration checklist that can be adapted for a project, support role or internal process review.
The course is designed for finance systems analysts, SAP consultants, accountants and project team members moving into SAP S/4HANA Finance configuration responsibilities. It is equally useful for managers who need staff able to challenge design choices, document controls and work effectively with functional and technical delivery teams.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Configure enterprise structures, including company codes, business areas, profit centres and fiscal year variants, for an SAP S/4HANA Finance design.
- Build a general ledger design using charts of accounts, account groups, retained earnings accounts, document types and posting period controls.
- Set up business partner roles and reconciliation account processes for customer and supplier accounting.
- Configure tax codes, payment terms, tolerance groups, dunning procedures and the automatic payment program for receivables and payables.
- Define parallel ledger, currency and document splitting settings that support statutory and management reporting requirements.
- Configure asset classes, account determination, depreciation areas and depreciation keys for fixed asset lifecycle processing.
- Apply validation and substitution rules through the SAP IMG and test their effect on accounting documents.
- Produce a Finance configuration workbook with test scripts, expected results, evidence of postings and open configuration decisions.
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain evidence-based experience configuring SAP S/4HANA Finance settings rather than only executing transactions.
- Build confidence discussing ledger, tax, payment and asset-accounting design decisions with finance stakeholders.
- Create a reusable configuration and test workbook for implementation, support or upgrade assignments.
- Strengthen readiness for SAP Finance functional consultant, finance systems analyst or ERP project roles.
- Improve ability to diagnose whether a posting issue originates in master data, configuration, controls or process execution.
For your organisation
- Reduce dependence on external consultants for routine Finance configuration analysis and testing.
- Improve the quality of documented design decisions for company codes, ledgers, tax, payments and asset accounting.
- Lower posting and period-close risk through better use of validation, substitution and posting-period controls.
- Enable more reliable Finance testing by using structured test scripts and expected accounting outcomes.
- Support cleaner integration between Finance, procurement, sales, banking and controlling workstreams.
Target competencies
Who should attend
- SAP S/4HANA Finance Consultants — who need practical configuration capability across core FI processes.
- Finance Systems Analysts — who translate accounting requirements into tested SAP settings.
- Financial Accountants — who support system design, controls and period-end processing in S/4HANA.
- ERP Project Team Members — who contribute to Finance workstreams during implementation or conversion projects.
- SAP Support Analysts — who investigate posting, payment, tax and master-data configuration issues.
- Finance Transformation Managers — who need to review Finance design choices and direct functional teams.
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand double-entry accounting, including debits and credits, balance sheet and profit-and-loss accounts, accounts payable, accounts receivable and basic period-end activities. Familiarity with navigating SAP Fiori Launchpad or SAP GUI is helpful, as is experience of an ERP finance process, but prior SAP configuration experience is not required. Attendees should be comfortable working with account structures, posting examples and spreadsheet-based test evidence. This is foundation to intermediate training: a complete SAP beginner can attend, but should expect to spend time learning S/4HANA terminology, navigation and configuration dependencies.
Training methodology
The instructor introduces each Finance process through a business requirement, demonstrates the relevant SAP S/4HANA configuration path, then guides participants through configuration and test activities in a training system. Labs use SAP Fiori apps, SAP GUI transactions and IMG settings to build a connected company scenario. Small-group reviews compare design options for ledgers, taxes, payment controls and assets. Daily debriefs link configuration choices to journal entries and reports. On day five, participants consolidate their settings, test evidence and unresolved decisions into an application plan for their own environment.
