Course overview
Annual compensation cycles often fail at the point where policy must become an executable plan: merit guidelines are unclear, eligibility rules are inconsistent, manager worksheets expose the wrong data, and budgets cannot be reconciled before statements are released. HR and compensation professionals need to translate pay philosophy, salary structures and governance requirements into SAP SuccessFactors Compensation configurations that managers can use confidently. This course addresses the practical work of designing, testing and operating compensation worksheets while maintaining control over budgets, approvals, ratings, eligibility and employee data.
Participants learn how SAP SuccessFactors Compensation plan templates, route maps, compensation worksheets, guidelines, budgets and reporting features work together in a planning cycle. They configure eligibility and employee-data fields, build merit and lump-sum guidelines, apply proration and rounding logic, set up budget groups, define planner roles and approval routes, and prepare compensation statements. The course also covers integrations with Employee Central, role-based permissions, template testing and common configuration decisions that affect fairness, usability and auditability.
Instruction combines focused demonstrations with guided configuration labs in a training environment. Participants work through a realistic annual merit-planning case, from plan design and data readiness to manager launch, budget monitoring and statement generation. They leave with a documented compensation cycle configuration pack containing a plan-template design, eligibility rules, guideline matrix, budget approach, route-map design, testing checklist and post-cycle review actions that can be adapted for their own organisation.
The course is best suited to HRIS professionals, compensation specialists and SAP SuccessFactors administrators who already understand core HR data and need to take responsibility for compensation planning configuration or operational support.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Configure a SAP SuccessFactors Compensation plan template with appropriate employee fields, columns and planner settings
- Build eligibility rules using employee data, compensation groups and effective-dated criteria
- Create merit, lump-sum and promotion guidelines using guideline matrices, proration and rounding rules
- Set up budget groups and budget calculations that control planner spending by organisational hierarchy
- Design route maps, planner roles and Role-Based Permissions for secure compensation approvals
- Validate Employee Central data mappings and compensation-cycle imports before worksheet launch
- Generate and review compensation worksheets, executive reports and compensation statements
- Produce a compensation cycle configuration pack with test cases, launch checks and governance controls
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain the ability to configure and troubleshoot annual merit-planning worksheets rather than relying solely on implementation partners
- Build credible evidence of SAP SuccessFactors Compensation capability through a documented cycle configuration pack
- Learn to connect compensation policy decisions to eligibility, guidelines, budgets and approval controls in the system
- Develop practical judgement for identifying data, permission and route-map issues before a compensation cycle goes live
- Prepare for expanded HRIS, total rewards or SuccessFactors consultant responsibilities involving compensation modules
For your organisation
- Reduce compensation-cycle rework by applying structured template, data and permission testing before manager launch
- Improve budget control through correctly configured budget groups, guidelines, proration and planner visibility
- Increase consistency of pay recommendations by translating approved compensation policy into standardised worksheet rules

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Compensation Analysts — who translate pay policy and salary-review rules into workable planning cycles
- HRIS Analysts — who configure, test and support SAP SuccessFactors Compensation processes
- SAP SuccessFactors Administrators — who maintain templates, permissions, data mappings and release readiness
- Total Rewards Specialists — who need to operationalise merit, bonus and budget decisions in the system
- HR Operations Managers — who oversee annual compensation-cycle delivery and manager support
- HR Technology Consultants — who design or validate Compensation module configurations for client organisations
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical familiarity with SAP SuccessFactors navigation, Admin Center concepts and basic employee-data structures. They should understand core compensation terms such as base salary, merit increase, lump sum, salary range, eligibility, budget and approval workflow. Experience using Employee Central or supporting an HRIS release is helpful because the course uses employee fields and effective-dated data in configuration examples. Prior configuration experience in the Compensation module is not required, and participants do not need programming, SAP ABAP, payroll configuration or advanced integration skills. This is an intermediate course: complete newcomers to SuccessFactors should first learn platform navigation and administration fundamentals.
Training methodology
The five-day programme alternates instructor-led configuration walkthroughs with supervised work in SAP SuccessFactors training scenarios. Participants inspect a sample compensation-cycle design, configure plan-template elements, load and validate employee-data fields, and test planner behaviour against policy cases. Small-group workshops resolve realistic issues such as an ineligible employee, an exceeded budget or an incorrect approval path. Daily debriefs connect configuration choices to governance outcomes. On the final day, each participant completes an application plan and presents the controls they would use for a planned or existing compensation cycle.
