Course overview
Slack can either shorten decision cycles or create a second inbox filled with fragmented requests, duplicated updates and conversations that no one can find later. Intermediate users are often comfortable sending messages and joining channels but lack shared practices for choosing the right channel, writing for action, escalating urgent work and preserving decisions. This course addresses the communication discipline behind effective Slack use, helping professionals reduce interruption, clarify ownership and make asynchronous collaboration dependable across teams, time zones and functions.
Participants learn to design a practical channel architecture; distinguish channel posts, direct messages, huddles and canvases; and write concise messages that specify context, owner, deadline and requested response. They practise threading, @mentions, reactions, saved items, reminders and search operators to keep work visible without generating noise. The course also covers communication norms for sensitive issues, incident response, cross-functional hand-offs, leadership updates and inclusive participation. Participants build workflows for recurring requests and establish governance rules for channel naming, membership, retention and decision records.
Delivery combines instructor demonstrations in a Slack workspace with realistic communication simulations, message-rewrite clinics and team-based channel-design workshops. Participants analyse a cluttered workspace, resolve an operational issue through asynchronous collaboration and practise turning a live discussion into a searchable decision record. Each participant leaves with a Slack Communication Playbook: a tailored set of channel conventions, message templates, escalation rules, workflow ideas and a 30-day implementation plan that can be reviewed with their manager.
The course suits professionals who already use Slack regularly and need to improve the quality, pace and traceability of team communication. It is particularly valuable for teams moving from ad hoc direct messages to shared, accountable ways of working.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Design a channel architecture using purpose statements, naming conventions and membership rules
- Write action-oriented Slack messages using context, owner, deadline and response-request structures
- Select channels, direct messages, huddles or canvases using a communication-routing decision matrix
- Apply thread, mention, reaction and reminder practices that reduce notification noise
- Retrieve decisions and commitments using Slack search operators, filters and saved items
- Facilitate asynchronous decision-making with structured proposals, evidence and closing summaries
- Build a recurring-request workflow in Slack Workflow Builder with clear ownership and hand-off steps
- Produce a Slack Communication Playbook and 30-day adoption plan for a working team

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Team Leaders — who need clearer ownership, faster decisions and fewer status-chasing messages
- Project Managers — who coordinate cross-functional work and must maintain visible decision records
- Operations Managers — who manage recurring requests, hand-offs and service interruptions across teams
- Internal Communications Specialists — who create channel standards and improve employee information flow
- Product Managers — who need to turn stakeholder discussion into prioritised, traceable product decisions
- HR and People Operations Professionals — who support distributed teams and need inclusive communication norms
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should use Slack at least weekly and be able to join channels, send messages, upload files, use @mentions and participate in threads. Familiarity with their organisation’s current channels, notification settings and common communication problems will make the exercises more useful. Participants should bring a laptop with access to a Slack workspace, preferably a non-production training workspace or an account approved for practice. No coding, administration rights, API knowledge or prior Workflow Builder experience is required. The course explains governance and workflow concepts from a communication-user perspective rather than a technical configuration perspective.
Training methodology
The instructor uses a live Slack training workspace to demonstrate features, then sets timed communication challenges based on project delivery, operations and leadership-update scenarios. Participants rewrite weak messages, design channels in small groups, search for buried decisions and practise resolving a case through threads, canvases and huddles. Peer review is guided by practical criteria: clarity, routing, ownership, urgency and record quality. Each day ends with a workplace application task, culminating in an individual Slack Communication Playbook and 30-day rollout plan.
