Course overview

Procurement managers are increasingly expected to prove that supplier decisions protect people, reduce environmental harm and support corporate social responsibility commitments without compromising continuity, quality or cost. Yet many teams still rely on supplier questionnaires that are not risk-based, award criteria that cannot be defended, and contract clauses that are too vague to monitor. This course equips procurement managers to turn sustainability and CSR requirements into repeatable sourcing, supplier-management and governance practices.

Participants learn how to apply ISO 20400 principles across the procurement lifecycle; identify environmental, labour, health and safety, human-rights and ethical-sourcing risks; and translate material risks into supplier prequalification criteria, weighted tender evaluations and measurable contract requirements. The course covers supplier ESG due diligence, life-cycle costing, Scope 3 emissions data requests, supplier segmentation, corrective action plans, audit evidence and performance dashboards. Participants practise balancing sustainability requirements with total cost, operational risk and market capability.

Teaching combines instructor-led frameworks with realistic sourcing cases, bid-evaluation workshops, supplier-risk exercises and peer review of procurement documents. Each participant develops a practical Sustainable Procurement Action Pack containing a category risk profile, supplier assessment scorecard, weighted evaluation matrix, contract KPI schedule and 90-day implementation plan. This gives both the participant and their manager a set of documents ready to adapt for a live category or supplier portfolio.

The course is designed for procurement managers responsible for sourcing decisions, supplier performance and policy implementation, as well as professionals moving into category, sourcing or responsible-procurement leadership roles.

Course objectives

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should understand the basic procurement cycle, including specification development, supplier prequalification, tendering, bid evaluation, contracting and supplier review. Experience working with purchase categories, supplier data or procurement policies is helpful, but specialist sustainability experience is not required. Participants should be comfortable reading supplier questionnaires and using spreadsheet tables for simple scoring and calculations. A complete beginner to sustainability and CSR can attend; the course introduces core ESG, human-rights due diligence, life-cycle costing and Scope 3 concepts before applying them. No prior ISO 20400, ISO 14001, EcoVadis or carbon-accounting certification is needed.

Training methodology

The programme uses short instructor-led inputs followed by procurement-focused application. Participants analyse supplier evidence, rank ESG risks in category scenarios, construct weighted bid-evaluation models and draft contract controls for emissions, labour and health and safety performance. Cases draw on common procurement situations such as facilities management, manufacturing inputs and logistics services. Group discussions test how requirements can be proportionate to supplier size and market maturity. Each day closes with an applied task that contributes to the participant’s Sustainable Procurement Action Pack and final implementation plan.

Day 1: Sustainable procurement foundations and risk priorities

• Health, safety, labour-rights and modern-slavery procurement risks
• Stakeholder mapping for procurement, HSE, legal, finance and operations

Workshop: Participants build a materiality and supplier-risk matrix for a chosen spend category and identify the three controls it requires.

Day 2: Supplier due diligence and responsible sourcing evidence

• Risk-based supplier prequalification design
• Supplier ESG questionnaires and evidence-request protocols
• Assessing policies, certifications, audit reports and corrective-action records
• EcoVadis scorecards and third-party supplier sustainability ratings
• ISO 14001 environmental management system evidence

Workshop: Participants review a simulated supplier submission, identify evidence gaps and create a proportionate due-diligence request list.

Day 3: Sustainable sourcing, tendering and award decisions
