Course overview
Finance professionals regularly prepare forecasts, approve transactions, interpret financial statements, and advise operating teams without always seeing the tax consequences embedded in those decisions. A missed VAT treatment, unsupported deductible expense, poorly timed asset purchase, or incorrect current-tax accrual can create cash leakage, reporting adjustments, penalties, and difficult audit queries. This course equips participants to identify tax-sensitive transactions early, ask the right questions of tax specialists, and incorporate tax effects into everyday finance work.
The programme covers the structure of direct and indirect taxation; taxable income and allowable deductions; capital allowances and depreciation differences; VAT/GST mechanics; payroll-related taxes; withholding tax; tax residence and permanent establishment concepts; and the accounting treatment of current and deferred tax under IAS 12. Participants practise building tax reconciliations, calculating taxable profit from accounting profit, reviewing invoice evidence, assessing transaction tax risks, and documenting assumptions for management reporting and tax advisers.
Instruction combines clear technical explanations with calculations, worked examples, spreadsheet models, and transaction-based case studies. Participants analyse realistic scenarios including cross-border service payments, asset acquisitions, employee benefits, and VAT exceptions. They leave with a practical tax review workbook containing calculation templates, a transaction risk checklist, a tax-calendar framework, and an action plan for applying controls within their finance function.
The course is designed for finance and accounting professionals who work alongside tax teams or external advisers and need a reliable working knowledge of tax principles rather than specialist tax-planning expertise. Examples can be discussed in the context of participants' operating jurisdictions while retaining the core concepts used across corporate finance environments.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Calculate taxable profit by reconciling accounting profit to taxable income using permanent and temporary differences
- Classify business expenditure as deductible, capital, disallowable, or timing-sensitive using an evidence-based review method
- Prepare a basic current-tax provision and effective-tax-rate reconciliation for management reporting
- Apply IAS 12 to identify taxable and deductible temporary differences and calculate deferred-tax balances
- Assess VAT/GST treatment for sales, purchases, imports, and cross-border services using place-of-supply logic
- Review payroll, withholding-tax, and employee-benefit transactions for common employer compliance exposures
- Use a transaction tax-risk checklist to escalate residence, permanent-establishment, and transfer-pricing issues
- Produce a tax compliance calendar and control action plan for recurring finance-team responsibilities
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain confidence explaining how tax affects profit, cash flow, pricing, and investment decisions
- Build working ability to challenge tax assumptions in budgets, forecasts, and month-end reporting
- Strengthen credibility with tax advisers by using correct terminology and supplying relevant transaction evidence

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Financial Accountants — who prepare period-end balances and need to support current and deferred tax entries
- Finance Managers — who approve transactions, budgets, and forecasts affected by tax cost and cash timing
- Management Accountants — who build profitability analyses and need to distinguish pre-tax and post-tax performance
- Accounts Payable Managers — who review supplier invoices, VAT evidence, and withholding-tax obligations
- Financial Analysts — who assess investment cases, asset purchases, and cross-border payments with tax implications
- Internal Auditors — who test tax-related controls, documentation, reconciliations, and compliance processes
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable reading an income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement, and general ledger extract. They should understand basic accounting concepts such as revenue, expenses, accruals, depreciation, provisions, and journal entries, and be able to use Microsoft Excel for simple formulas and spreadsheet navigation. Prior tax training is not required; the course starts with core terminology and calculation logic before moving to applied finance cases. Participants do not need tax-law qualifications, specialist tax software, or prior experience preparing statutory tax returns. Complete beginners to finance should first gain basic financial accounting knowledge.
Training methodology
The instructor leads structured sessions using tax calculation walkthroughs, annotated financial statements, and jurisdiction-neutral transaction scenarios. Participants work in Excel to reconcile accounting and taxable profit, calculate current and deferred tax, and test VAT/GST and withholding-tax treatments. Small groups examine invoice packs, payroll extracts, and cross-border payment cases, then defend their conclusions using a tax-risk checklist. Daily debriefs connect technical rules to finance controls. On the final day, each participant completes an application plan and tax-control priorities for their own role or team.
