Course overview
Cloud teams often inherit manually configured accounts, inconsistent environments and infrastructure changes that cannot be reliably reviewed or reproduced. Terraform provides a repeatable way to define cloud resources as version-controlled code, but production use requires more than writing basic .tf files. Engineers must design reusable modules, manage state safely, control provider credentials, plan changes before deployment and build workflows that work across development, test and production environments.
This five-day Terraform Infrastructure as Code for Cloud Training Course develops the practical skills needed to build and operate maintainable Terraform estates. Participants work with the Terraform CLI, HCL configuration language, providers, resources, data sources, variables, outputs, modules, workspaces and remote state. They apply dependency management, lifecycle rules, dynamic expressions, state inspection and import techniques, then implement automated validation, policy controls and CI/CD deployment patterns using Git and HCP Terraform.
Instructor-led demonstrations are followed by guided labs based on a realistic multi-environment cloud platform. Participants progressively build a reusable Terraform codebase for network, compute and security components, with module documentation, remote-state configuration, environment variables and a controlled deployment workflow. The final deliverable is a structured Infrastructure as Code repository and implementation plan that participants can adapt to their organisation's cloud landing zone, application platform or operational standards.
The course is designed for cloud engineers, platform teams and senior technical staff who already work with cloud services and need to move from individual Terraform configurations to governed, collaborative infrastructure delivery. Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable working at a command line and editing text-based configuration files. They need practical familiarity with at least one major cloud platform, including concepts such as virtual networks, subnets, compute instances, identity permissions and storage services. Prior experience with Git branches, commits and pull requests is assumed, as is a basic understanding of JSON or YAML-style structured configuration. Participants do not need prior Terraform experience, software development expertise or advanced shell scripting. The course teaches HCL and Terraform workflow from first principles, then quickly moves into production-oriented patterns.
Training methodology
The course combines focused instructor-led explanations with daily Terraform CLI labs in an isolated cloud training environment. Participants inspect provider documentation, write and test HCL configurations, interpret execution plans and troubleshoot deliberately introduced state and dependency issues. Small-group design reviews compare module boundaries, repository structures and environment strategies for a shared cloud platform case. Each day closes with a practical build task, and the final day includes an application-planning workshop in which participants map the completed reference implementation to their own cloud estate, controls and delivery pipeline.

Day 1: Terraform foundations and cloud resource modelling
- Infrastructure as Code operating model and Terraform workflow
- Terraform CLI installation, initialization and provider plugins
- HCL syntax, blocks, arguments and expression types
- Provider configuration and authentication patterns
- Resources, data sources and resource addressing
- Input variables, local values and output values

Workshop: Build a baseline cloud network and compute configuration, then produce and review a Terraform execution plan.
Day 2: Reusable configuration and environment design
- Module structure, module calls and module source references
- Module input contracts, output interfaces and validation blocks
- Meta-arguments including count, for_each and depends_on
- Conditional expressions, for expressions and dynamic blocks
- Resource lifecycle rules and replacement behaviour
- Repository layouts for development, test and production environments
- Terraform workspaces versus directory-based environment separation
Workshop: Create a versioned network module and use it to deploy separate development and production environment configurations.
Day 3: State, dependencies and safe infrastructure change
- Terraform state purpose, contents and security implications
- Remote backends, state locking and access-control patterns
- State inspection with terraform state subcommands
- Importing existing cloud resources into managed state
- Resource moves, refactoring and moved blocks
- Dependency graphs and execution-order troubleshooting
- Sensitive values, secret injection and state exposure controls
Workshop: Migrate a local configuration to remote state, import an existing resource and safely refactor its Terraform address.
Day 4: Team workflows, testing and governance
- Git branching, pull requests and Terraform code review criteria
- Formatting and static validation with terraform fmt and terraform validate
- Plan files, detailed exit codes and approval gates
- HCP Terraform workspaces, runs and variable sets
- Continuous integration pipeline stages for Terraform changes

Day 5: Production implementation and operational handover
