Course overview
Business teams often wait for analysts to translate straightforward questions into dashboards, SQL requests, or spreadsheet extracts. ThoughtSpot changes that workflow by allowing users to search governed data in natural language, but only when reports, worksheets, and Liveboards are designed around trusted business definitions. This course helps intermediate BI professionals move from static dashboard production to search-driven analytics that gives managers, sales teams, finance users, and operations leaders fast answers without compromising data governance.
Participants learn to model and prepare data for ThoughtSpot, create worksheets with appropriate joins and column settings, and build search experiences that return reliable results. They practise writing effective search queries, applying filters and date functions, creating table and chart Answers, and assembling reusable Liveboards. The course also covers SpotIQ-assisted analysis, pinboards and visualisations, sharing permissions, row-level security considerations, and techniques for curating trusted content for recurring business questions.
Instructor-led demonstrations are followed by guided labs using a realistic commercial data model covering customers, products, orders, revenue, and sales performance. Participants finish with a published reporting pack: a governed worksheet, a set of validated Answers, and a Liveboard designed for a named stakeholder group. They also receive a practical implementation plan identifying priority search use cases, data-quality dependencies, ownership roles, and adoption measures for their own organisation.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Configure a ThoughtSpot worksheet with joins, column properties, synonyms, and business-friendly labels
- Construct natural-language search queries using filters, aggregations, groups, date functions, and ranking
- Create validated Answers as tables and charts for defined business questions
- Build a stakeholder-specific Liveboard with interactive visualisations, filters, and saved Answers
- Apply ThoughtSpot search tokens, synonyms, and column formatting to improve query accuracy
- Use SpotIQ to investigate drivers, anomalies, trends, and correlations in a governed dataset
- Set sharing and access permissions for Liveboards and Answers using agreed governance rules
- Produce a search-driven reporting pack and adoption plan for a departmental analytics use case

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Business Intelligence Analysts — who need to deliver governed self-service reporting in ThoughtSpot
- Data Analysts — who translate business questions into reusable Answers and Liveboards
- Analytics Managers — who need to standardise reporting content and encourage trusted self-service analysis
- Reporting Developers — who are moving from scheduled dashboards to search-led analytics experiences
- Data Product Owners — who define business metrics, data access, and adoption priorities for analytics products
- Business Systems Analysts — who support operational teams using customer, finance, sales, or service data
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience interpreting business reports and working with relational data concepts such as tables, columns, measures, dimensions, keys, joins, filters, and aggregation. Familiarity with an existing BI tool such as Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, or Looker is useful, as is the ability to read simple SQL SELECT statements. Attendees should ideally have access to a ThoughtSpot training tenant or organisational environment containing sample data. Advanced SQL, Python, data engineering, machine learning, and prior ThoughtSpot administration experience are not required.
Training methodology
The course combines short instructor-led explanations with live ThoughtSpot demonstrations and individual hands-on labs in a prepared analytics environment. Participants work through a connected sales and operations case, beginning with worksheet design and progressing to searches, Answers, Liveboards, SpotIQ investigations, and controlled sharing. Group review sessions compare alternative search formulations and visual choices against stakeholder questions. On the final day, each participant develops a reporting pack and application plan, then receives instructor feedback on usability, governance, and business relevance.
